Shulin Liu et al.

Summary: This study aims to comprehensively understand the pollution characterization of microplastics (MPs) in Chinese Bays, including their contamination factors, geographic distribution, interactions, risk evaluation, and abundance prediction. The study found that the abundance of MPs varied in different bays, with concentrations ranging between 0.26+/-0.14-89,500+/-20,600 items/m3 in water, 15+/-6-6433.5 items/kg dry weight in sediment, and 0.21+/-0.10-103.5 items/individual in biota. The study also revealed that sampling and extraction/identification methods, as well as geographical locations, were the major drivers affecting MP distribution and characteristics.

Fate and Effects of Macro- and Microplastics in Coastal Wetlands

Xiaoguang Ouyang et al.

Summary: Coastal wetlands serve as traps for plastics, but little is known about the stocks and impacts of plastics in these areas. We conducted a comprehensive evaluation of plastic abundance in coastal wetlands, finding that the abundance of plastics in sediment and the ingestion by marine animals far exceeds that in the water column. The abundance of plastics varies across different types of coastal wetlands and is influenced by climate, geography, seasons, and population density or waste management. Plastic ingestion by fish increases with size and weight. Microplastics have negative effects on biota abundance and mangrove survival but positive effects on sediment nutrients, leaf drop, and carbon emission. It is crucial to include microplastics in assessing the health and degradation of coastal wetland ecosystems.

Microplastic characteristic in the soil across the Tibetan Plateau

Ling Yang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated microplastic pollution in the soil across the Tibetan Plateau and found that microplastics were ubiquitous but relatively low in abundance in this region. Fibers were the predominant type of microplastics, followed by transparent and white microplastics. Higher levels of microplastic pollution were found near cities, areas with lower wind velocity, higher altitude, and higher precipitation. These findings provide valuable insights for future research on the ecological impacts of microplastics on terrestrial ecosystems.

Selective adsorption of antibiotics on aged microplastics originating from mariculture benefits the colonization of opportunistic pathogenic bacteria

Xiaoxuan Yu et al.

Summary: Microplastics and antibiotics coexist in the aquatic environment, and the adsorption of antibiotics on microplastics and their impact on microorganisms are poorly understood. This study conducted in-situ aging experiments to investigate the interaction between antibiotics, microplastics, and microorganisms, and assessed the potential risks to human health. The results showed selective adsorption of antibiotics on microplastics, and the concentration of accumulated antibiotics was influenced by the type of microplastics and environmental conditions. High-throughput sequencing revealed a higher diversity of microorganisms attached to the microplastics compared to the surrounding water. Opportunistic pathogenic bacteria were found to have positive relationships with certain antibiotics on aged microplastics, indicating the potential spread of pathogens into unaffected ecosystems and human populations. The health risk quotient (HQ) suggested the potential human health risks of consuming seafood contaminated with antibiotics and microplastics. This study provides valuable insights into the synergistic effects of antibiotics, microplastics, and microorganisms on ecological and human health.

Summary: Microplastic contamination in reservoirs is a global issue that lacks a comprehensive understanding of its occurrence, drivers, and risks. Through a systematic review and analysis of existing publications, a dataset was constructed to analyze various factors influencing microplastic pollution in reservoirs. The study found significant variations in microplastic abundance, with small-sized microplastics being dominant globally. Factors such as geographic location, seasonal variation, and land use type were identified as key influences on microplastic distribution. Detection methods are essential for accurate assessment, with the study suggesting the need for reliable and standardized techniques. Recommendations and high-risk areas were identified, indicating the need for improved policies to control microplastic pollution in reservoirs.

Enhanced aging of polystyrene microplastics in sediments under alternating anoxic-oxic conditions

Shanshan Chen et al.

Summary: Research has found that microplastics displayed the highest degree of aging in alternating anoxic-oxic sediments. Experiments showed that the weight losses and O/C ratios of PS-MPs aged under alternating anoxic-oxic conditions were about 2 times higher than those aged under static oxic and static anoxic conditions during a 2-month period. Similarly, in a 2-month column experiment, the PS-MPs in the alternating anoxic-oxic group showed significantly higher weight losses and O/C ratios compared to the static oxic and static anoxic groups. The dark production of center dot OH, positively correlated with a Fe redox process, was identified as a key factor in enhancing MP aging under alternating anoxic-oxic conditions.

Contribution of Microplastics to Carbon Storage in Coastal Wetland Sediments

Summary: The study reveals that microplastics are primarily concentrated in surface sediment and vegetated coastal sediments. Currently, carbon from microplastics contributes between 0.001% and 1.197% to sediment carbon pool at different depths. Despite the low contribution, microplastics have already had a hidden impact on coastal sediment carbon stock. These data help establish a baseline for the contributions of microplastics to total carbon storage in peri-urban coastal sediments.
