Ecological stability of microbial communities in Lake Donghu regulated by keystone taxa

Shengwei Liu et al.

Summary: This study used network analysis to investigate the seasonal stability of microbial communities in lake ecosystems. The results showed distinct differences in microbial networks among seasons, with the most complex network in autumn exhibiting the highest stability. Water temperature and pH were found to be significantly correlated with strong connecting structures among microbes, which impacted keystone taxa and destabilized microbial communities. Additionally, the presence of keystone taxa contributed to the stability of the networks, and their removal resulted in unstable networks. The specific composition of keystone taxa in different seasons was influenced by environmental filtering and interspecific interactions. These findings highlight the influence of seasonal variations in environmental factors on microbial networks and community stability.

Distinct strategies of the habitat generalists and specialists in sediment of Tibetan lakes

Qi Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the assembly processes and co-occurrence patterns of generalists and specialists in Tibetan lake sediments. The results showed that generalists exhibited broader environmental thresholds and closer phylogenetic clustering, while specialists exhibited stronger phylogenetic signals of ecological preferences. Stochastic processes dominated the community assembly, and sediment pH mediated the balance between stochastic and deterministic processes. Network analysis revealed that specialists played a greater role in maintaining the stability of the metacommunity co-occurrence network.

Eutrophication dangers the ecological status of coastal wetlands: A quantitative assessment by composite microbial index of biotic integrity

Lihua Niu et al.

Summary: The intertidal wetland ecosystem is vulnerable to both environmental and anthropogenic stressors. By analyzing microbial communities, it is possible to assess the ecological status of wetlands, which are mainly influenced by factors like inorganic nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total organic carbon. The study found that fishery aquaculture and industrial development are the main anthropogenic activities affecting the ecological status of tidal wetlands.

Effects of Terrestrial Inputs on Mesozooplankton Community Structure in Bohai Bay, China

Danyang Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial and seasonal distribution patterns of mesozooplankton in Bohai Bay and their relationship with water parameters. The results reveal the influence of terrestrial inputs and seawater intrusion on the diversity of mesozooplankton species. The study also highlights the impact of human activities on the succession of the mesozooplankton community, indicating the importance of mesozooplankton in the marine ecosystem.

Species and functional diversity of marine macrobenthic community and benthic habitat quality assessment in semi-enclosed waters upon recovering from eutrophication, Bohai Bay, China

Yifeng Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structure and function of macrobenthic community in Bohai Bay after water quality improvement. The results showed that the community structure had improved, but it was still in the early stage of recovery. Habitat instability may hindered the community's response to water quality improvement. Additionally, the ecological status in most areas of Bohai Bay was classified as good.

Evaluating the effects of aquaculture on the freshwater lake from the perspective of plankton communities: The diversity, co-occurrence patterns and their underlying mechanisms

Huimin Xu et al.

Summary: Aquaculture has significant impacts on freshwater lakes, particularly on plankton communities. In this study, the effects of aquaculture on water quality, plankton diversity, and plankton metacommunity co-occurrence patterns were examined in a shallow freshwater lake. The results showed that ecological aquaculture was more efficient in nitrogen removal than ecological restoration. Moreover, lower bacterioplankton diversity but higher phytoplankton and zooplankton diversity were observed in the ecological aquaculture and ecological restoration zones. The lower network connectivity of the plankton metacommunities in these zones suggested a possible lower resistance to future disturbance. Additionally, different mechanisms drove plankton communities of different trophic levels.

Water quality shifts the dominant phytoplankton group from diatoms to dinoflagellates in the coastal ecosystem of the Bohai Bay

Yuyao Song et al.

Summary: This study conducted two cruises in the Bohai Bay (China) to investigate the phytoplankton community and its relation to water quality. The research found that the river inlet had severe eutrophication, while most of the open area was non-eutrophic. Phytoplankton populations respond differently to different aquatic environments and are controlled by more than two factors.

Distribution of Chromophytic Phytoplankton in the Eddy-Induced Upwelling Region of the West Pacific Ocean Revealed Using rbcL Genes

Laxman Pujari et al.

Summary: Marine chromophytic phytoplankton are a diverse group of algae contributing significantly to oceanic primary production. This study investigated their community structure and spatial distribution in the West Pacific Ocean, revealing dominant groups and differences between upwelling and non-upwelling zones. Physicochemical parameters, especially phosphate, temperature, and other dissolved nutrients, were found to influence the distribution of chromophytic phytoplankton in this area.

Specialized metabolic functions of keystone taxa sustain soil microbiome stability

Weibing Xun et al.

Summary: The study revealed that bacterial communities with higher phylogenetic diversity tend to be more stable, indicating that microbiomes with higher biodiversity are more resilient to disturbances. Functional gene co-occurrence network and machine learning classification analyses identified specialized metabolic functions, especially nitrogen metabolism and phosphonate and phosphinate metabolism, as key functions. Further taxonomic annotation revealed that these key functions are carried out by specific bacterial taxa, including Nitrospira and Gemmatimonas.

Community assembly mechanisms and co-occurrence patterns of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria communities in saline soils

Xiang Li et al.

Summary: The study reveals that high salinity significantly inhibits the activity of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria and decreases the abundance of Nitrobacter and Nitrospira. Under extreme salty conditions, the diversity and composition of Nitrospira community are significantly altered, while the Nitrobacter community is less affected.
