Multi-specific small-scale fisheries rely on few, locally essential, species: Evidence from a multi-area study in the Mediterranean

Antonio Calo et al.

Summary: Maintaining the sustainability of small-scale fisheries is crucial for sustaining livelihoods, local economies, social wealth, and cultural heritage in coastal areas. However, the lack of information on these fisheries hinders proper assessment and may lead to inappropriate conclusions and ineffective policies. A multi-disciplinary assessment of small-scale fisheries in 11 areas across 6 Mediterranean EU countries revealed that despite high species diversity, these fisheries economically rely on a limited number of species. Additionally, some fishing communities depend on a restricted number of fishing gears. This emphasizes the need to reconsider assumptions about small-scale fisheries, particularly from a broader socio-ecological perspective, to reduce the risk of socio-ecological inequalities.

Expected contraction in the distribution ranges of demersal fish of high economic value in the Mediterranean and European Seas

Emna Ben Lamine et al.

Summary: Investigating the future distributional changes of fish species in the Mediterranean Sea is important for the fisheries and aquaculture industry to adapt to climate change. This study used ensemble modelling to estimate the current and future distribution range of eight economically valuable demersal fish species. The results show that temperature and primary production are the main factors influencing their distribution. The projections suggest a contraction of their distribution range and a shift towards the North European coasts in response to future climate conditions. This has significant economic implications for Mediterranean fisheries.

European small pelagic fish distribution under global change scenarios

Alexandre Schickele et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential changes in the spatial distribution of seven of the most harvested small pelagic fish species in Europe under different climate change scenarios. The results showed that the environmental suitability for most species may decrease in the Mediterranean and western North Sea, while increasing in the Black and Baltic Seas. Under the most pessimistic scenario, climate-related local extinctions were expected in the south-eastern Mediterranean basin.

European cephalopods distribution under climate-change scenarios

Alexandre Schickele et al.

Summary: This study focused on the distributional shifts of three common cephalopod species in Europe: Octopus vulgaris, Sepia officinalis, and Loligo vulgaris. It was found that regardless of global warming scenarios, there is a decreasing suitability of environmental conditions in the Mediterranean Sea and the Bay of Biscay, while there is a rapid increase in environmental suitability in the North, Norwegian, and Baltic Seas.

Improving predictions of invasive fish ranges combining functional and ecological traits with environmental suitability under climate change scenarios

Alexandre Schickele et al.

Summary: This study developed an empirical index based on functional and bio-ecological traits to estimate the Invasive Potential (IP) of 13 fishes expanding their distributional range into the Mediterranean Sea. Results showed the importance of functional traits related to reproduction for determining high invasion potential, and highlighted a potential future expansion of high Environmental Suitability Index (ESI) values, and thus REINS IP, towards the northern Mediterranean due to climate change.
