Efficient recovery of lead and iron from disposal residues of spent lead-acid batteries

Fei Li et al.

Summary: This study proposed a mechanism for efficient recovery of lead and iron in the disposal residues of spent lead-acid batteries by identifying their spatial position relationships. The results showed that lead and iron could be recovered in high yields through acid leaching and pH adjustment. The formation of hydroxylated Fe2SiO4 surfaces induced by NaOH was found to promote the transformation of Fe2SiO4 to FeO.

Multifaceted evaluation of distribution, occurrence, and leaching features of typical heavy metals in different-sized coal gasification fine slag from Ningdong region, China: A case study

Yang Guo et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the distribution, chemical speciation, environmental impact, and leaching behavior of typical heavy metals in coal gasification fine slag (CGFS) from the Ningdong region, China. The results show that the distribution of heavy metals in different size fractions of CGFS is particle size dependent, and the environmental risk levels and leaching concentrations of these heavy metals vary among different size fractions. Additionally, some heavy metals in the CGFS exceed the groundwater-related regulatory limit in China.

A shortcut approach for cooperative disposal of flue dust and waste acid from copper smelting: Decontamination of arsenic-bearing waste and recovery of metals

Jianyong Che et al.

Summary: A two-step pyrometallurgical process was developed to preferentially separate arsenic and recover metals from copper smelting flue dust (CSFD). Experimental results showed that effective removal of arsenic was achieved by using copper industry waste acid as an additive in the lowtemperature roasting process, followed by the successful recovery and separation of metals based on the affinity between metals and sulfur in the second stage of roasting. This process can efficiently remove arsenic and effectively recover metals, minimizing environmental impacts.

A novel strategy for harmlessness and reduction of copper smelting slags by alkali disaggregation of fayalite (Fe 2 SiO 4 ) coupling with acid leaching

Sihai Zhang et al.

Summary: The study proposed a novel strategy for the harmlessness and reduction of copper smelting slags through alkali disaggregation of Fe2SiO4 coupled with acid leaching. This method effectively changed the Fe2SiO4 phase in the slag, releasing embedded harmful and valuable metals, and achieving significant reduction of As, Zn, Fe, Cu, and Pb in the slags. The strategy resulted in a 48.1% weight reduction of copper smelting slags and could potentially be a new method for achieving harmlessness and reduction in this process.

Advanced mineral magnetic and geochemical investigations of road dusts for assessment of pollution in urban areas near the largest copper smelter in SE Europe

Neli Jordanova et al.

Summary: This study evaluates urban pollution near Cu-smelter and ore mining in three towns using magnetometric and geochemical analyses. Industrial and traffic-related magnetic minerals were found to contribute to pollution, with dust emissions posing significant health hazards caused mainly by Arsenic pollution in hot spots. The strong correlation between magnetic susceptibility and potentially toxic elements allows for detailed monitoring and mapping of pollution in urban areas.

Hongliang Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, a reduction-sulfurization smelting method was used to recover copper and cobalt from converter slags by using spent pot lining as the reductant. The experiments showed that under suitable conditions, copper and cobalt recovery rates exceeded 98% and 96%, respectively.

Study of the micromorphology and health risks of arsenic in copper smelting slag tailings for safe resource utilization

Liqun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study on slag tailings revealed the presence of arsenic in the form of maghemite and fayalite, with uneven distribution of arsenic-bearing minerals. The evaluation assessed the health risks to children exposed to the tailings, finding no harm to their health, but identified a potential higher hazard index with longer activity time of workers in the tailing workshop. Despite the certain bioavailability of arsenic in the slag tailings, it was not found to adversely impact human health.
