Bottled water contaminant exposures and potential human effects

Paul M. Bradley et al.

Summary: Despite concerns about environmental contaminant exposures and health risks in drinking water supplies, the consumption of bottled water has increased in the United States and globally. This study provides insight into exposures and cumulative risks to human health from inorganic/organic/microbial contaminants in bottled water.

Modeling the toxicity of pollutants mixtures for risk assessment: a review

M. Sigurnjak Bures et al.

Summary: The presence of contaminants in natural waters poses a potential threat to the environment, especially in multi-component systems where interactions can lead to varying levels of toxicity. While experimental determination of toxicity in multi-component systems is possible, utilizing predictive models is faster, more environmentally friendly, and cost-effective. Conventional models like concentration addition and independent action models are still widely used, but integrated models offer greater accuracy despite requiring more data. Advanced numerical methods like genetic algorithms, neural networks, and fuzzy set theory are providing new perspectives on toxicity prediction, although a universal tool for toxicity assessment has not yet been developed.

Pilot-scale expanded assessment of inorganic and organic tapwater exposures and predicted effects in Puerto Rico, USA

Paul M. Bradley et al.

Summary: A pilot-scale expanded target assessment of mixtures of inorganic and organic contaminants in point-of-consumption drinking water was conducted in Puerto Rico. The study found elevated concentrations of inorganic contaminants, disinfection byproducts, and to a lesser extent per/polyfluoroalkyl substances and phthalates in tap water, supporting further investigation of potential cumulative risks to vulnerable populations in Puerto Rico. The importance of continued broad characterization of drinking-water exposures at the tap with analytical capabilities that better represent the complexity of both inorganic and organic contaminant mixtures known to occur in ambient source waters was emphasized.

Public and private tapwater: Comparative analysis of contaminant exposure and potential risk, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA

Paul M. Bradley et al.

Summary: The study in Cape Cod, Massachusetts indicates comparable cumulative human-health concerns from contaminant exposures in private- and public-supply tap water sharing the same groundwater source. Increased public engagement and water treatment measures are needed to reduce long-term risks associated with tap water contaminant exposures, especially in vulnerable populations. The study underlines the importance of monitoring and regulating water quality to ensure safe drinking water for all.

Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment for Contaminated Private Wells in the Fractured Dolomite Aquifer of Kewaunee County, Wisconsin

Tucker R. Burch et al.

Summary: This study investigated the health burden associated with contamination of private wells in Kewaunee County by feces-borne gastrointestinal pathogens. The results suggest that private well contamination could be responsible for as many as 301 acute gastrointestinal illness cases per year in the county, with bovine and human fecal sources being the main contributors. Cryptosporidium parvum was predicted to be the most common pathogen causing illness in the quantitative microbial risk assessment.

Sources and Risk Factors for Nitrate and Microbial Contamination of Private Household Wells in the Fractured Dolomite Aquifer of Northeastern Wisconsin

Mark A. Borchardt et al.

Summary: The study found that total coliforms and nitrate in groundwater were mainly associated with depth-to-bedrock at well sites and nearby agricultural land, not septic systems. Both human wastewater and cattle manure were contributors to well contamination. Nitrate and Escherichia coli were the most frequently detected contaminants.

Darrin A. Thompson et al.

Summary: The study found that neonicotinoids were widespread in alluvial aquifers, with clothianidin, imidacloprid, and thiamethoxam being the most commonly detected compounds. Solid phase extraction method was more sensitive than direct aqueous injection method.

Comparison of detection limits estimated using single- and multi-concentration spike-based and blank-based procedures

William T. Foreman et al.

Summary: The study compared spike- and blank-based methods for estimating detection limits in water samples, finding that blank-based detection limits estimated using large numbers of blank samples provided results closer to the desired risk level. For organic methods, spike-based methods are needed to simulate blank distribution and estimate detection limits.

A critical review of point-of-use drinking water treatment in the United States

Jishan Wu et al.

Summary: Ensuring safe water supply in communities across the United States faces challenges due to aging infrastructure, impaired source water, and strained community finances. Point-of-use drinking water treatment technologies are increasingly popular due to the high risk of exposure to contaminants, but lack real-time performance monitoring.

Estimate of Burden and Direct Healthcare Cost of Infectious Waterborne Disease in the United States

Sarah A. Collier et al.

Summary: The provision of safe drinking water in the United States is an important public health achievement, but new challenges have emerged with waterborne diseases. Approximately 7.15 million waterborne illnesses occur annually in the US, with most hospitalizations and deaths caused by biofilm-associated pathogens. The total direct healthcare costs incurred from waterborne infectious diseases reach $3.33 billion annually.
