The impact of urban green space morphology on PM2.5 pollution in Wuhan, China: A novel multiscale spatiotemporal analytical framework

Shibo Bi et al.

Summary: The study found that urban green space morphology can reduce PM2.5 pollution in high-density urban areas. Using multiscale geographically weighted regression, the authors analyzed the relationship between urban green space morphology and PM2.5 pollution at different geographical scales. The results showed that the impact of different types of urban green space morphology on PM2.5 pollution varies, and the advantage of the MGWR method decreases with an increase in spatial scale. This research provides important theoretical insights into the complex relationship between urban green space morphology and PM2.5 pollution, as well as other ecological environment issues.

Direct and indirect impacts of urbanization on vegetation growth across the world's cities

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: Based on satellite observations from 2001 to 2018, this study examines the direct and indirect impacts of urbanization on vegetation growth in 672 cities worldwide. It finds a widespread positive indirect effect of urbanization on vegetation growth, which has been increasing over time. These indirect effects are influenced by urban development intensity, population density, and background climate, with higher positive effects in cities with cold and arid environments. The study also suggests that the vegetation responses to urbanization are modulated by a cities' developmental status.

Species-specific efficiency in PM2.5 removal by urban trees: From leaf measurements to improved modeling estimates

Mattias Gaglio et al.

Summary: The growing population in cities is causing a deterioration of air quality, but trees and urban forests can help improve this issue by removing air pollutants. Different plant species have different abilities to remove particulate matter, so it is important to consider their characteristics when assessing the effectiveness of PM removal.

Multiscale analysis of the effects of urban green infrastructure landscape patterns on PM2.5 concentrations in an area of rapid urbanization

Kongming Li et al.

Summary: The study found that PM2.5 concentrations slightly increased in urban expansion areas and decreased in some older urban areas, with the lowest and highest concentrations occurring in winter and summer, respectively. At the urban agglomeration scale, a small proportion of the PM2.5 variations could be attributed to UGI landscape patterns, with wind speed and relative humidity having a stronger impact on PM2.5 concentrations. Landscape shape index and bridges were identified as main indicators affecting PM2.5 concentrations. At the neighborhood scale, indicators such as largest patch index, area-weighted mean shape index, aggregation index, Core, and Loop were found to influence PM2.5 concentrations, with seasonal and scale effects observed. The study suggests that UGI landscape patterns have a more significant impact on PM2.5 concentrations at the neighborhood scale compared to the urban agglomeration scale, providing valuable insights for urban planning and air pollution control.

Green infrastructure can limit but not solve air pollution injustice

Viniece Jennings et al.

Summary: Outdoor air pollution leads to millions of deaths worldwide, with differential exposures among racial/ethnic groups and socioeconomic status. Although green infrastructure has the potential to reduce air pollution and improve human health, it is not sufficient to address health disparities related to air pollution injustice. Unequal access to green infrastructure may limit air quality improvements for marginalized communities, and strategies are needed to address this issue.
