Enrichment of primary macronutrients in biochar for sustainable agriculture: A review

Adnan Asad Karim et al.

Summary: Macronutrient-enriched biochars have the potential to recycle nutrients from waste, improve soil fertility, reduce fertilizer consumption, and promote sustainable agriculture. The recent focus has been on exploring different methods for producing macronutrient-enriched biochar fertilizers, and there is a need for further scientific understanding and advancement in this field. This review provides crucial information about the production and use of nutrients-enriched biochars, as well as their potential challenges and future perspectives. The main focus of these biochars is on nitrogen and phosphorus, and they can enrich up to 10%, 15.32%, and 25.85% of total N, P, and K respectively. However, more research is needed on the bio-labile and plant available fractions of these nutrients. Overall, the prospects of nutrients-enriched biochars for sustainable agriculture have gained momentum, and further engineered biochars hold great potential for specific soil-plant-environment systems.

Allocation of foliar-P fractions of Alhagi sparsifolia and its relationship with soil-P fractions and soil properties in a hyperarid desert ecosystem

Yanju Gao et al.

Summary: Desert vegetation in the juncture of the Qira oasis and the Taklamakan Desert typically grows on phosphorus-poor soils. Alhagi sparsifolia, a widely distributed plant in this area, plays an important ecological role and is a valuable forage resource. Researchers studied the foliar-P utilization strategy of A. sparsifolia in different soil sites with varying P availability, finding that foliar-P allocation patterns were closely related to soil-P fractions and properties. These results provide insight into A. sparsifolia's response to environmental nutrients.

Fertile islands beneath three desert vegetation on soil phosphorus fractions, enzymatic activities, and microbial biomass in the desert-oasis transition zone

Yanju Gao et al.

Summary: Desertification poses a significant threat to desert ecosystems, but perennial desert vegetation can slow down the process by creating fertile islands. This study found that the transformation of soil phosphorus and enzymatic activities were closely related to the soils beneath canopy. Soil depth and plant species also played a role in affecting soil properties. The fertile island effect was consistent with canopy size.

Decreases in soil P availability are associated with soil organic P declines following forest conversion in subtropical China

Liuming Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that the conversion of natural forests to plantations significantly decreased most soil P fractions, including labile inorganic P, organic P, and moderately labile organic P. This was partly due to declines in microbial populations that play a key role in releasing P. Organic P decomposition facilitated by microbial phosphatases can sustain P availability in forest soils.

Effects of nitrogen-enriched biochar on rice growth and yield, iron dynamics, and soil carbon storage and emissions: A tool to improve sustainable rice cultivation

Xiaolei Yin et al.

Summary: The study found that moderate inputs of N-rich biochar (4 t ha(-1)) can increase rice crop yield and biomass, increase soil DOC concentrations, and mitigate soil carbon emissions, in part, by the impacts of biochar on soil Fe dynamics. Therefore, we suggest that water management strategies, such as dry-wet cycles, should be employed in rice cultivation to increase Fe2+ oxidation for the inhibition of soil CH4 and CO2 production.

Effects of biochar addition on the abundance, speciation, availability, and leaching loss of soil phosphorus

Lu Yang et al.

Summary: Biochar has the potential to influence soil phosphorus transformations by providing soluble and exchangeable phosphorus, enhancing the availability of endogenic soil phosphorus, and affecting phosphorus leaching losses. Application of biochar to soils can enlarge soil phosphorus pools, increase phosphorus availability, and decrease phosphorus leaching losses. Further studies are needed to understand the long-term effects of biochar addition on soil phosphorus transformations and explore its impact on mineral-associated phosphorus and particulate phosphorus transport in biochar-amended soils.

Effects of addition of nitrogen-enriched biochar on bacteria and fungi community structure and C, N, P, and Fe stoichiometry in subtropical paddy soils

Xiaolei Yin et al.

Summary: Application of nitrogen-enriched biochar in paddy soils increased total carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus concentrations. It also led to a decrease in N/P and C/P ratios, while increasing phosphorus fixation capacity. The abundance of certain fungi increased with biochar treatment, while the relative abundance of certain bacteria decreased. The changes in microbial community composition were driven by shifts in soil physicochemical properties and led to improvements in soil nutrient enrichment.
