Global to local impacts on atmospheric CO2 from the COVID-19 lockdown, biosphere and weather variabilities

Ning Zeng et al.

Summary: The global lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in an economic slowdown and a significant reduction in fossil fuel CO2 emissions. Using an advanced atmospheric transport model, researchers found that the lockdown measures and weather variability were the main contributors to the decrease in atmospheric CO2 concentration.

Global Carbon Budget 2022

Pierre Friedlingstein et al.

Summary: Accurately assessing anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions is crucial for understanding the global carbon cycle, developing climate policies, and predicting climate change. This article describes the methodologies and data used to quantify the components of the global carbon budget and their uncertainties. The data for 2021 shows an increase in fossil fuel and land-use change emissions, as well as the impacts of the atmosphere, ocean, and terrestrial biosphere on carbon absorption.

Global and regional carbon budget for 2015-2020 inferred from OCO-2 based on an ensemble Kalman filter coupled with GEOS-Chem

Yawen Kong et al.

Summary: Understanding carbon sources and sinks is crucial in climate science and policy, but remains a topic of debate. This study develops a new atmospheric inversion system to estimate surface-to-atmosphere net carbon fluxes. The results align with other global inversion models, but discrepancies exist in land-ocean flux partitioning and seasonal flux amplitudes.

WOMBAT v1.0: a fully Bayesian global flux-inversion framework

Andrew Zammit-Mangion et al.

Summary: WOMBAT is a fully Bayesian hierarchical statistical framework for flux inversion of trace gases, extending the conventional framework by considering correlated errors and online bias correction, providing uncertainty quantification on all unknowns in the statistical model. Experiments show the importance of these extensions when data are biased and have spatio-temporally correlated errors; using an atmospheric transport model, WOMBAT can obtain posterior means and variances on CO2 fluxes comparable to those reported in the Model Intercomparison Project, and its predictions of out-of-sample retrievals from TCCON data are generally more accurate than those made by MIP participants.

Air Pollution From Forest and Vegetation Fires in Southeast Asia Disproportionately Impacts the Poor

Carly L. Reddington et al.

Summary: The study found that eliminating forest and vegetation fires could significantly improve air quality in Southeast Asia, reducing population exposure to PM2.5 and surface ozone concentrations. This would result in considerable public health benefits, averting around 59,000 premature deaths annually. Analysis of poverty data indicates that particulate pollution from fires disproportionately impacts poorer populations across the region.

The added value of satellite observations of methane forunderstanding the contemporary methane budget

Paul Palmer et al.

Summary: Surface observations of atmospheric methane changes in this century have been large but incompletely understood, limited by their biased geographical distribution towards the northern midlatitudes. The launch of GOSAT satellites since 2009 has provided additional coverage over the tropics, revealing significant increases in methane emissions driven by biomass burning, biogenic emissions, and energy production, especially after the 2014/2016 El Nino event. Such better spatial coverage and resolution measurements allow quantification of previously unattainable diffuse sources of methane, opening up a new research frontier.

Spatiotemporal Variations and Uncertainty in Crop Residue Burning Emissions over North China Plain: Implication for Atmospheric CO2 Simulation

Yu Fu et al.

Summary: The emissions of greenhouse gases and aerosols from crop residue burning in the North China Plain exhibit large uncertainties, with significant seasonal and interannual variations. Different estimation methods show varying levels of uncertainties, with crop residue burning emissions being highly uncertain in small agricultural fire areas and more stable in larger ones. The changes in biomass burning emissions could have a substantial impact on CO2 and air pollutant increases during summertime pollution events in the region.

New Inventories of Global Carbon Dioxide Emissions through Biomass Burning in 2001-2020

Tomohiro Shiraishi et al.

Summary: This study created eight global CO2 emission inventories from 2001 to 2020 by combining various data sources, revealing high uncertainty in emission estimation. Input datasets, particularly biomass density, were found to have a significant impact on CO2 emission estimation. The study assessed the performance of climate and fire models by emphasizing the uncertainty of fire emission estimation resulting from the input sources.

Summary: Studies show that total carbon emissions are higher in eastern Amazonia compared to the western part, mainly due to fire emissions. Climate change and deforestation have led to increased ecosystem stress, more frequent fires, and higher carbon emissions in eastern Amazon.
