Calibration of a Distributed Hydrological Model (VIC-3L) Based on Global Water Resources Reanalysis Datasets

Sakine Koohi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the applicability of global water resources reanalysis datasets for hydrological model calibration and finds that SSM datasets perform better in simulating streamflow hydrographs than other datasets. ET datasets are not as reliable for hydrological calibration in the study area. The combination of ET and SSM datasets yields better results than using only one dataset.

Mapping actual evapotranspiration using Landsat for the conterminous United States: Google Earth Engine implementation and assessment of the SSEBop model

Gabriel B. Senay et al.

Summary: The estimation and mapping of actual evapotranspiration (ETa) using thermal remote sensing-based methods have been successful, but with variable accuracy. This study presents the CONUS-wide ETa using Landsat thermal imagery and the SSEBop model in the cloud computing platform. The accuracy assessment shows mixed performance and directional biases, suggesting the need for improvement and bias correction. The study highlights the potential applications of ETa mapping for drought and fire effects at regional and field scales.

Investigating Relationships between Runoff-Erosion Processes and Land Use and Land Cover Using Remote Sensing Multiple Gridded Datasets

Claudia Adriana Bueno da Fonseca et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationships between climate variability and spatiotemporal land use and land cover changes on runoff-erosion processes in the Almas River basin. The results showed that changes in land use and land cover increased agriculture and livestock areas, leading to higher streamflow and sediment yield. Measures should be taken to reduce soil erosion in this biome.

A Global 250-m Downscaled NDVI Product from 1982 to 2018

Zhimin Ma et al.

Summary: By developing a simple and new data downscaling approach, we successfully created a high-resolution NDVI database on a global scale for monitoring the changes in vegetation ecosystems. Evaluation of the downscaled data showed similarities to the MODIS NDVI product in terms of accuracy. We also utilized the downscaled data to monitor NDVI changes in different plant types and locations with vegetation heterogeneity, as well as to study global vegetation trends over the past four decades.

Review: Sources of Hydrological Model Uncertainties and Advances in Their Analysis

Edom Moges et al.

Summary: Hydrological models continue to be uncertain due to various factors such as input data, calibration, model structure, and parameters. Different methods for uncertainty analysis are categorized into six broad classes, but there is limited application for structural uncertainty. Further research is needed to improve computational efficiency, address various sources of uncertainty, enhance applications in environmental changes and human-natural-hydrological systems, and make it easier for practitioners to apply uncertainty analysis.

Uncertainty and Sensitivity Analysis of a Remote-Sensing-Based Penman-Monteith Model to Meteorological and Land Surface Input Variables

Nobuhle P. Majozi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the uncertainty and sensitivity of core and intermediate input variables of a remote-sensing-data-based Penman-Monteith (PM-Mu) evapotranspiration (ET) model. The results showed relatively high uncertainties associated with relative humidity (RH) and the ET algorithm was most sensitive to the air-land surface temperature difference. Accurate assessment of both in situ and remotely sensed variables is crucial for reliable ET model estimates in dry regions and climates. The remote-sensing-based ET method offers a significant advantage of full area coverage compared to classic-point-based estimates.

Modelling Snowmelt Runoff from Tropical Andean Glaciers under Climate Change Scenarios in the Santa River Sub-Basin (Peru)

Elmer Calizaya et al.

Summary: The effects of climate change, such as decreased precipitation and increased temperature, have led to sharp declines in glaciers and increased surface runoff due to snowmelt in various regions. The study applied the snowmelt runoff model (SRM) along with other climatic data to model snowmelt runoff in the Santa River sub-basin and projected future runoff under different climate change scenarios. The results showed consistent patterns of runoff changes, with decreases in summer months and increases throughout the rest of the year, with substantial increases projected in early months and lower records in summer.

Han Yang et al.

Summary: This study assimilated multiple remote-sensed PSM data into a high spatial resolution distributed hydrological model, generating high-resolution PSM estimations which were found to be more accurate than both the original remote-sensed PSM data and the model-simulated PSM. The assimilation of the SMAP PSM dataset into the model showed potential for improving streamflow simulations for the studied catchments.
