Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Contaminated Soil and Groundwater at Airports: A Canadian Case Study

Min Liu et al.

Summary: The occurrence of 93 classes of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) was investigated at AFFF-impacted sites of Canadian airports. PFAS profiles, loads, and spatial trends were site-specific, influenced by AFFF use history. Zwitterionic and cationic compounds composed a large percentage in surface soil samples but a relatively low percentage in groundwater samples. This study provides critical data to support developing new priority analyte lists and integrating TOP assay for comprehensive PFAS monitoring at AFFF-impacted sites.

Long-Term Trends of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in Suspended Particular Matter from German Rivers Using the Direct Total Oxidizable Precursor (dTOP) Assay

Bernd Goeckener et al.

Summary: Retrospective investigation of suspended particulate matter (SPM) from 13 riverine sampling sites in the German Environmental Specimen Bank collected between 2005 and 2019 revealed the presence of substantial amounts of unknown per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) precursors. Conventional target analysis overestimated actual PFAS concentration decreases, highlighting the importance of considering precursors in environmental assessments. The dTOP assay proved to be a suitable tool for detecting unknown PFAS precursors in the samples.

Combining target analysis with sum parameters-a comprehensive approach to determine sediment contamination with PFAS and further fluorinated substances

Marc Guckert et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that combining target analysis with an extended PFAS spectrum, EOF, and TOP assay is a comprehensive approach to assessing PFAS contamination in sediments. PFAS were found to be ubiquitous in the sediments of water bodies in Northern Germany, with higher concentrations of PFCAs. The application of the TOP assay resulted in an increase in PFCAs, improving the accuracy of fluorine mass balance analysis.

Legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in Dagang Oilfield: Multimedia distribution and contributions of unknown precursors

Yue Meng et al.

Summary: The study conducted in Dagang Oilfield, Tianjin, China, revealed that PFASs were widespread and correlated with TPH levels, with C4 and C8 precursors showing a positive correlation with TPH levels, while C6 precursors may come from other sources. Further research is needed to clarify the mass balance and risk assessment of unknown PFASs.

Legacy and emerging per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) in sediment and edible fish from the Eastern Red Sea

Aasim M. Ali et al.

Summary: Poly- and perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) were detected in sediment and edible fish from the Saudi Arabian Red Sea, with wastewater treatment plant effluents being the main source. PFOS was the most abundant compound, and PFAS levels and patterns varied between fish tissues. The dietary intake of certain PFASs in fish from Jeddah exceeded safety thresholds, posing a potential health risk to humans.
