Response surface analysis of energy balance and optimum condition for torrefaction of corn straw

Shuai Guo et al.

Summary: Corn straw has potential as a biofuel and torrefaction is an effective process to improve its energy grade. This study optimized the torrefaction process of corn straw by investigating three process parameters: temperature, heating rate, and residence time. The findings provide data to support the establishment of corn straw torrefaction devices.

Global fine-scale changes in ambient NO2 during COVID-19 lockdowns

Matthew J. Cooper et al.

Summary: Using satellite observations of NO2 column densities, we derived spatially resolved ground-level NO2 concentrations globally and compared them between cities during the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020 and 2019. The study found that strict lockdown conditions were associated with a 29% ± 3% decrease in average country-level population-weighted NO2 concentrations compared to countries without lockdowns. The decrease in NO2 during COVID-19 lockdowns exceeded year-to-year decreases from emission controls and was comparable to reductions equivalent to 15 ± 4 years globally.

Unlocking the unsustainable rice-wheat system of Indian Punjab: Assessing alternatives to crop-residue burning from a systems perspective

Andrea S. Downing et al.

Summary: Crop residue burning in Indian Punjab has detrimental impacts on health, climate, and agricultural production. Despite existing legal and technological barriers to burning, it continues due to lack of financial incentives for change. This study provides a systems perspective on the issue, highlighting the need for crop diversification, circular business models, and green financing. Financial institutions can play a crucial role in driving transformative changes by setting sustainability conditions on loans.

Carbonaceous gas and aerosol emissions from biomass burning in China from 2012 to 2021

Yongxiang Liu et al.

Summary: Open biomass burning (OBB) has significant impacts on air pollution, human health, and climate change. This study used an optimized Fire Radiative Power (FRP) algorithm to estimate the emissions of carbonaceous gases and aerosols (CGA) from OBB in China and assessed their spatiotemporal characteristics. The results show that CGA emissions in China are concentrated in the Northeast, North, Southwest, and East regions, with a trend of initially increasing, then decreasing national emissions.

Feasibility study of prescribed burning for crop residues based on urban air quality assessment

Junliang Cao et al.

Summary: This study conducted a feasibility study of prescribed burning for crop residues based on air quality assessment in urban regions. The results showed that under controlled factors, prescribed burning can efficiently dispose of crop residues while ensuring air quality in urban areas. The findings can be used to design burning schemes for crop residue and promote sustainable development in agriculture and urban environments.

Sentinel-5P TROPOMI NO2 retrieval: impact of version v2.2 improvements and comparisons with OMI and ground-based data

Jos van Geffen et al.

Summary: The improvements in the TROPOMI NO2 retrieval leading to version v2.2 have resulted in more accurate monitoring of nitrogen dioxide emissions from local sources, particularly in areas with low cloud cover and cold climates. Additionally, these enhancements have brought TROPOMI data closer to observations from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI).

Estimating air pollutant emissions from crop residue open burning through a calculation of open burning proportion based on satellite-derived fire radiative energy

Ying Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found a significant logarithmic relationship between OBP and FRE, and developed FRE-based OBP estimation models for different regions in China. The estimated OBP showed an increasing trend from 2003 to 2014, followed by a sharp decrease from 2014 to 2018. Using year-specific OBP for estimation significantly improved accuracy in emissions calculations from open biomass burning.

Environmental and political implications of underestimated cropland burning in Ukraine

Joanne Hall et al.

Summary: Open burning is illegal in Ukraine, yet agricultural activities contribute to frequent fires, most of which are preventable. Traditional burned area estimation algorithms are not suitable for the black soil regions of Ukraine, leading to the development of a new method to estimate agricultural burning areas.

Vast CO2 release from Australian fires in 2019-2020 constrained by satellite

Ivar R. van der Velde et al.

Summary: The amount of carbon dioxide released by the Australian wildfires of 2019-2020 is estimated to be more than twice the amount suggested by fire inventories, with a total of 715 teragrams estimated from November 2019 to January 2020. These wildfires were driven partly by climate change and highlight the importance of better-constrained emission estimates due to the potential impact on atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.
