A porous biochar supported nanoscale zero-valent iron material highly efficient for the simultaneous remediation of cadmium and lead contaminated soil

Wei Qian et al.

Summary: In this study, a porous biochar supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (BC-nZVI) was used to immobilize cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in clayey soil. The results showed that BC-nZVI process had better immobilization efficiency for Cd and Pb compared to other processes. Additionally, BC-nZVI addition increased soil pH and organic matter content. This study suggests that BC-nZVI is a potential technology for the remediation of heavy metals in soil.

A novel lignin hydrogel supported nZVI for efficient removal of Cr(VI)

Xiaoyan Liu et al.

Summary: A novel hydrogel-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) composite, synthesized by ion exchange and in-situ reduction, showed enhanced removal efficiency for Cr(VI) compared to pure nZVI. The composite exhibited high removal capacity under acidic conditions, attributed to chemical reduction/precipitation, surface sorption, and swelling uptake mechanisms. The lignin hydrogel acted as a carrier, preventing aggregation of nZVI particles and improving their reactivity and utilization.

Guilherme Victor Vanzetto et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) remediation on the growth of bacteria and environmental parameters in soil contaminated with hexavalent chromium and pentachlorophenol. The results showed that nZVI had no toxic effects on bacterial population and did not cause major disturbances in temperature, electrical conductivity, pH, and humidity in the soil.

Fei Chai et al.

Summary: In this study, nZVI was successfully anchored onto mussel-inspired polydopamine-coated cellulose nanocrystals to form CNCs-PDA-nZVI. CNCs-PDA-nZVI exhibited higher arsenic adsorption capacity and superior arsenic removal efficiency compared to pristine cellulose nanocrystals. The arsenic removal mechanisms of CNCs-PDA-nZVI involved adsorption-oxidation, coprecipitation, and inner-sphere complexation.

Andre Baldermann et al.

Summary: Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) based composites supported by clay mineral substrates show promise for the in-situ remediation of groundwater and soils contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons. The nZVI-B nanocomposite, with higher reactivity and efficiency for TCE removal compared to pure nZVI, demonstrates the potential for use in permeable reactive barriers for contaminated field sites while minimizing reduction of soil-bearing capacity.
