Microplastic ingestion and egestion by copepods in the Black Sea

Ulgen Aytan et al.

Summary: For the first time, the ingestion and egestion of microplastics by copepods in the Black Sea was evaluated, along with the composition and concentration of microplastics in the water column. The study found that copepods in the Black Sea are contaminated by microplastics, which poses risks to their critical functions in the ecosystem. Additionally, copepods may act as vectors for the transfer of microplastics and associated toxic chemicals to higher trophic levels, including humans.

Physical and chemical degradation of littered personal protective equipment (PPE) under simulated environmental conditions

Gabriel Enrique De-la-Torre et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the physicochemical degradation of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the marine environment and found that PPE undergoes changes in polymer backbone, crystallinity, and physical integrity due to sun exposure. The presence of harmful elements and signs of physical degradation were also detected. These findings contribute to a better understanding of PPE degradation in the marine environment and the subsequent release of microplastics and chemical contaminants.

The wedge clam Donax trunculus L., 1758 as a bioindicator of microplastic pollution

Mohamed Ben-Haddad et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of D. trunculus as a bioindicator of microplastic pollution caused by beach urbanization in Morocco. The results show that the density of microplastics is influenced by the degree of urbanization in the area, with polyethylene and polypropylene being the main types of polymers detected. The study recommends using D. trunculus as a bioindicator and implementing sustainable coastal management after urban changes in coastal areas.

Are we underestimating floating microplastic pollution? A quantitative analysis of two sampling methodologies

Gabriel Enrique De-la-Torre et al.

Summary: This study compares the effects of trawl and bulk sampling methods on the abundance and characteristics of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic ecosystems. The results show that bulk studies report an MP abundance 3500 times higher than trawl studies, and the morphological types, polymer abundance, and size ranges of MPs are also significantly affected by the type of sampling tool. Therefore, it is recommended to select appropriate sampling methods based on research objectives and even combine multiple methods to obtain comprehensive data.

Summary: This study evaluated the levels of LABs and MPs in oysters from six farming areas in southern Brazil, revealing high concentrations of LABs and presence of microplastics in oysters. The microplastics were found to contain various elements and were positively correlated with thermotolerant coliforms, indicating sewage discharge as the main source of contamination. The study emphasizes the importance of efficient wastewater treatment and depuration techniques in farming areas.

Mohamed Rida Abelouah et al.

Summary: This study presents preliminary results on the abundance, distribution, characteristics, sources, and fate of microplastics (MPs) in the Central Atlantic Ocean (CAO) of Morocco. MPs were detected in all sampling sites, with higher abundances in surface seawater linked to urban areas. Polyester and polypropylene were the dominant polymer types, with fibers being the most common shape. MPs were mainly smaller than 2 mm and had colorful aspects. Wastewater treatment plant effluents and anthropogenic activities were identified as the major pollution sources of MPs in the study area.
