Positive effects of applying endophytic bacteria in eggplant-Sedum intercropping system on Cd phytoremediation and vegetable production in cadmium polluted greenhouse

Luyao Ma et al.

Summary: The intercropping of eggplant and hyperaccumulator Sedum has been studied in the remediation of cadmium contaminated soil. The results showed that intercropping had a negative effect on the growth of both crops, but the application of endophytic bacteria alleviated this inhibition. Intercropping increased the cadmium concentration in the edible part of eggplant, while the application of endophytic bacteria reduced the cadmium concentration and promoted cadmium uptake by Sedum. The intercropping treatment also increased the availability of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the soil.

An Alliance of Trifolium repens-Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii-Mycorrhizal Fungi From an Old Zn-Pb-Cd Rich Waste Heap as a Promising Tripartite System for Phytostabilization of Metal Polluted Soils

Ewa Olenska et al.

Summary: This study explored the association between Trifolium repens and its microbial symbionts, Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii and mycorrhizal fungi, in the Boleslaw waste heap in South Poland. The results showed that the rhizobia originating from the nutrient-poor waste heap area were efficient in nodulation and nitrogen fixation, and that the symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi played a crucial role in the adaptation of T. repens to high metal concentrations. This association appears to be a promising tool for phytostabilization of metal-polluted soils.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of pesticides CP and DM on soil microbial diversity and their removal in soil microcosms. The analysis showed certain dominant species were completely eliminated in the presence of the pesticides. The metagenomic analysis revealed the enrichment of certain phyla during the remediation process. Assessment of microbial community evenness indicated that Shannon and Simpson Indexes were more sensitive, while Chao1 and ACE indexes were influenced by community abundance. The study also found significant negative impacts of DM and CP on soil microbial communities.

Sheng Zheng et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the changes in the soil ecological microenvironment of coal gangue contaminated areas after 10 years of in situ restoration using Artemisia sacrorum, Imperata cylindrica, and Populus spp. The results showed that phytoremediation significantly increased soil enzyme activity, reduced electrical conductivity and heavy metal content. The microbial community in the shallow soil increased in number and diversity, with certain bacterial species becoming dominant in the restoration area. Phytoremediation also altered the soil metabolic level and enriched specific pathways essential for soil detoxification and carbon cycling.

Changes in clover rhizosphere microbial community and diazotrophs in mercury-contaminated soils

Haixia Zhu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the response of soil microbiome, including bacteria in the rhizosphere of clover, to mercury stress in contaminated soils from Guizhou province, China. High concentrations of soil mercury reduced bacterial community abundance and diversity while increasing the abundance and diversity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Rhizobium was identified as a biomarker at sites with high soil mercury contents, and the co-occurrence network analysis indicated a positive relationship between the dominant module of Rhizobiaceae and soil mercury concentration. Additionally, soil total nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen, soil organic matter, and available molybdenum contents were found to be important factors influencing the microbial community structure and abundance of functional genes.
