Land cover based simulation of urban stormwater runoff and pollutant loading

Haibin Yan et al.

Summary: This study introduced a new land-cover based (LCB) model in urban stormwater modeling, demonstrating that the consideration of land cover can significantly improve model accuracy, particularly in hydrological simulation. The LCB model outperformed the traditional watershed delineation tool (WDT) model in hydrological simulation, while showing comparable performances in simulation of total suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) loading.

Particle size distribution and total suspended solid concentrations in urban surface runoff

Hongtao Zhao et al.

Summary: An in-depth understanding of particle size distribution and total suspended solids (TSS) in surface runoff is crucial for managing urban diffuse pollution. Field experiments and model simulation were used to explore the dynamic behavior of TSS and influencing factors, showing that higher TSS concentrations in surface runoff contained coarser particles washed off from road-deposited sediments. Factors such as rainfall characteristics, urban-rural gradients, surface roughness, and climate differences affect the contribution rate of RDS to TSS by altering particle size composition.

Event mean concentration and first flush from residential catchments in different climate zones

Shagun Chaudhary et al.

Summary: This study investigates the differences in EMC and first flush across catchments in different climate zones. The results show that EMC varies significantly between climate zones, with the highest average EMC in dry zones and the lowest in tropical zones. The study also finds that catchments in the tropics exhibit stronger first flush, especially for particulate parameters.

Robustness analysis of storm water quality modelling with LID infrastructures from natural event-based field monitoring

Sijie Tang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the robustness of water quality modelling in sponge city construction using automatic calibration technique and field monitoring data. Results show that greenbelts and rain gardens perform the best, while barrels and green roofs are less robust. The modelling performance tends to be better under heavy rain and significant pollutant concentrations, indicating a potentially more stable and reliable design of infrastructures.

Catchment based estimation of pollutant event mean concentration (EMC) and implications for first flush assessment

Thamali Perera et al.

Summary: The study introduced an innovative approach to estimate the Event Mean Concentration (EMC) of stormwater runoff, identifying maximum rainfall intensity and average intensity as the most influential variables affecting EMC. By creating a mathematical model, it was possible to predict EMC effectively and define the first flush runoff.

The influence of urban surface type and characteristics on runoff water quality

Frances J. Charters et al.

Summary: The study collected untreated runoff from different impermeable surfaces to quantify the differences in water quality due to surface type, age, condition, and location. Results showed that zinc and copper concentrations in runoff from zinc and copper roofs were significantly higher than water quality guidelines, indicating the importance of different removal processes for dissolved versus particulate metals.
