The role of colloids and other fractions in the below-ground delivery of phosphorus from agricultural hillslopes to streams

Maelle Fresne et al.

Summary: The study found that fine P dominated streams during baseflow conditions, while shallow groundwater in TA was mostly dominated by fine P and in TG by PP, possibly due to colloidal Fe-P complexes. During high flow events, TG shallow groundwater was dominated by PP, while a smaller flow event facilitated delivery of P via deeper baseflow pathways. Limited medium-sized colloidal P presence was observed, with a large presence of fine P potentially contributing to elevated P concentrations. Further research is needed on the factors controlling colloidal P presence, as well as the extent and speciation of P fractions in the hillslope to stream continuum.

Soil water status shapes nutrient cycling in agroecosystems from micrometer to landscape scales

Sara L. Bauke et al.

Summary: This article investigates the relationship between soil water status and the cycling of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur in agroecosystems. It discusses the impact of soil water on nutrient imbalance and availability at different scales. Water plays a crucial role in nutrient cycling in agroecosystems, affecting the balance and availability of nutrients across different levels.

Impact of flow pathway and source water connectivity on subsurface sediment and particulate phosphorus dynamics in tile-drained agroecosystems

Saeid Nazari et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamics of sediment and particulate phosphorus (PP) loading in a midwestern subsurface tile drained agroecosystem, and assessed the impact of flow pathway and water sources on subsurface sediment loads. The findings suggest that reducing preferential transport of new water may be an effective strategy for reducing sediment and particulate P loadings at the edge-of-field.

Summary: This study investigated the physicochemical properties of particulate P in tile water samples during a high flow event in Midwestern agricultural lands, revealing that P is enriched in particulate matters and colloids are effective carriers of P during storm events.

Soil chemical and fertilizer influences on soluble and medium-sized colloidal phosphorus in agricultural soils

Maelle Fresne et al.

Summary: The study found that medium-sized P-coll in soils was mostly unreactive P associated to some extent with amorphous forms of iron. Higher soil maximum P sorption capacity was correlated with lower concentrations of medium-sized P-coll, while soluble P concentrations increased with increasing DPS.

FTIR spectral band shifts explained by OM-cation interactions

Ruth H. Ellerbrock et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interactions between OM in soils and polyvalent cations such as Ca2+, and their effects on FTIR spectra. The results showed that band shifts were influenced by cation concentrations, limiting automated interpretations of FTIR spectra without prior spectral corrections specific to soils.

Colloidal catchment response to snowmelt and precipitation events differs in a forested headwater catchment

Dymphie J. Burger et al.

Summary: Climate change affects nutrient exports in catchment stream water through high-discharge events. Colloidal exports of N, S, and P vary between late winter and spring. Phosphorus is mainly transported by colloids in spring, while nitrogen and sulfur are predominantly dissolved during both seasons.
