Dual-carbon isotope constraints on source apportionment of black carbon in the megacity Guangzhou of the Pearl River Delta region, China for 2018 autumn season

Fan Jiang et al.

Summary: This study used dual-carbon isotope fingerprinting and Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo method to study the key sources of black carbon (BC) in Guangzhou, China. The results showed that petroleum combustion was the dominant contributor, followed by coal combustion and biomass burning. Fossil fuel combustion was found to contribute the most to BC reduction.

Tracking PM2.5 and O3 Pollution and the Related Health Burden in China 2013-2020

Qingyang Xiao et al.

Summary: Based on exposure data sets, this study investigated the spatiotemporal variations in PM2.5 and O3 exposures during 2013-2020, finding a decrease in national PM2.5 exposure but worsened O3 pollution. The improved air quality led to a reduction in premature deaths related to both long- and short-term exposures compared to 2013, with a greater reduction in long-term exposure-related deaths observed in 2017-2020 due to the nonlinear exposure-response curve. Efforts are needed for coordinated control of PM2.5 and O3 for future air quality improvements.

Elevated Formation of Particulate Nitrate From N2O5 Hydrolysis in the Yangtze River Delta Region From 2011 to 2019

Min Zhou et al.

Summary: Aerosol nitrate has become the most abundant compound in aerosol pollution in eastern China. The response of nitrate to nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction is still unclear despite the government's stringent policies. The study found that elevated dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5) hydrolysis is responsible for the observed increase in nitrate.

Long-Term Evolution of Particulate Nitrate Pollution in North China: Isotopic Evidence From 10 Offshore Cruises in the Bohai Sea From 2014 to 2019

Zheng Zong et al.

Summary: Atmospheric nitrate (NO3-) pollution is hindering the reduction of fine particulate (PM2.5) concentration in North China. Long-term measurements of NO3- and isotopic knowledge indicate an increasing proportion of NO3- in PM2.5 and seasonal variations in the isotopic composition of nitrate linked to coal combustion. The decline in coal combustion contribution, along with the enhancement of atmospheric oxidation and microbial processes, are the main causes of the increasingly serious NO3- pollution in North China.

Modeling particulate nitrate in China: Current findings and future directions

Xiaodong Xie et al.

Summary: This article reviews recent modeling studies on the formation mechanism, trends, and response to emission controls of particulate nitrate (pNO(3)) in China. The results show that while chemical transport models can capture the spatial-temporal variations of pNO(3), there are still uncertainties and biases due to parameterization and model limitations. Heterogeneous hydrolysis of N2O5 dominates nocturnal pNO(3) formation, but its contribution varies among studies. The increasing pNO(3) fraction in recent years is mainly attributed to reduced SO2 emissions, enhanced atmospheric oxidation capacity, and weakened nitrate deposition. Reducing NH3 emissions is found to be the most effective control strategy. More field measurements and research are needed to understand the relationships of pNO(3) with other factors.

A diurnal story of Δ17O(NO3-) in urban Nanjing and its implication for nitrate aerosol formation

Yan-Lin Zhang et al.

Summary: Inorganic nitrate production is crucial in atmospheric chemistry and can reflect the oxidation capacity and acidity of the atmosphere. This study explored the chemical mechanisms of nitrate evolution in winter aerosols in Nanjing, China, using the oxygen anomaly of nitrate. The continuous observation of the oxygen anomaly suggested the dominance of nocturnal chemistry in nitrate formation, with significant diurnal variations in nitrate formation pathways.

Vertical Differences of Nitrate Sources in Urban Boundary Layer Based on Tower Measurements

Mei-Yi Fan et al.

Summary: Reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions is crucial in limiting global fine particulate pollution. This study used nitrogen isotopes to measure vertical variations of nitrate in Beijing, revealing a significant difference in nitrogen isotopes of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in winter. It was found that coal combustion contributed more to nitrate aerosols in the upper air of Beijing through regional transport. However, in summer, there were no significant variations in nitrate sources. These findings suggest that conventional ground-based observations may underestimate the contribution of coal combustion to atmospheric aerosols.

Control of particulate nitrate air pollution in China

Shixian Zhai et al.

Summary: The concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in China decreased by 30-50% from 2013 to 2018 due to emission controls, but the nitrate component did not decrease effectively. Increased particulate nitrate concentration during winter haze pollution events is attributed to the particulate fraction transitioning from gaseous nitric acid. Reducing ammonia emissions is suggested as an effective method to decrease the nitrate component of fine particulate matter pollution in the North China Plain.
