Anode biofilm maturation time, stable cell performance time, and time-course electrochemistry in a single-chamber microbial fuel cell with a brush-anode

Huong V. H. Tran et al.

Summary: For accurate and reproducible MFC experiments, it is important to determine the time point at which MFCs produce stable cell performance. Four replicate single-chamber MFCs were tested over a period of 17 weeks using polarization and cyclic voltammetry (CV) tests. The strong MFCs showed continuous performance enhancement initially and maintained good subsequent performance, while the weak MFC experienced a performance drop initially and showed poor subsequent performance. All MFCs reached stable performance after 9 weeks. The strong MFCs exhibited significantly higher power and lower anode resistance compared to the weak MFC. However, their cathode resistances were similar. CV results demonstrated continuous increase in anodic current production in all MFCs, indicating the growth of anode biofilms; however, this increase did not correspond to an increase in MFC performance. Anodic CVs showed a typical S-shape curve, but the weak MFC-1 showed straight lines from the 9th week onwards. The weak MFC-1 exhibited smaller CV currents and thinner CV curves compared to the strong MFCs. Regression analysis revealed that anode resistance was a limiting factor for the weak MFC, while cathode resistance was a limiting factor for the strong MFCs. This suggests an operating principle of improving anodes in weak MFCs and cathodes in strong MFCs to achieve better performance.

Microbial fuel cell scale-up options: Performance evaluation of membrane (c-MFC) and membrane-less (s-MFC) systems under different feeding regimes

Xavier Alexis Walter et al.

Summary: In this study, the performance and efficiency of ceramic microbial fuel cells (c-MFCs) and self-stratifying microbial fuel cells (s-MFCs) under similar feeding conditions were compared. The results showed that c-MFCs displayed constant performance independently from the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and had high energy conversion efficiency at longer HRT. On the other hand, the performance of s-MFCs was correlated with HRT, with the best performance achieved under short HRT. However, the energy conversion efficiency of s-MFCs remained constant regardless of HRT.

Real-world natural passivation phenomena can limit microplastic generation in water

Yunhong Shi et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastic release levels from plastics exposed to tap water and synthetic drinking water were similar, indicating that synthetic drinking water can be a suitable reference standard for testing microplastic release levels from plastic products. Polypropylene products exposed to boiling tap water developed a protective copper oxide film, leading to a significant reduction in microplastic release.

Summary: This study found that by adjusting the anode area and external resistance, the sensitivity of the microbial fuel cell (MFC)-based oil sensor can be significantly improved. The control of substrate concentration has a smaller impact on sensitivity. The research also revealed that the sensitivity factor related to the ratio of ORR and oxygen transfer is key to enhancing sensitivity.

Summary: The study found that in a wastewater MFC system, the biocathode's microbial community formed a specialized biofilm with electrogenic and electrotrophic characteristics. The power output of the system was most influenced by pH, with higher power densities associated with filtrate containing increased organic matter, conductivity, and pH. Future MFC designs should consider the impact of size, shape, and orientation of biocathodes on their community assembly and electrotrophic ability.
