Is the climate change mitigation effect of enhanced silicate weathering governed by biological processes?

Sara Vicca et al.

Summary: Enhanced silicate weathering (ESW) has been proposed as a negative emission technology with significant climate change mitigation potential. However, differences between lab and real soil conditions, as well as the impact of biological processes on weathering rates, may influence the effectiveness of ESW in sequestering CO2 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It is crucial to include biological factors in ESW research to fully understand its climate change mitigation effects.

Potential of enhanced weathering of calcite in packed bubble columns with seawater for carbon dioxide removal

Lei Xing et al.

Summary: Enhanced weathering of calcite with seawater using air enriched with CO2 was investigated in this study. A mathematical model of the reactor was constructed and validated with experimental data, revealing the performance in terms of energy consumption and CO2 capture rate. The major energy requirements were found to be for liquid pumping, gas compression, and CO2 enrichment. The study also quantified the space requirement for capturing 1 tonne of CO2, taking into account degassing of the weathering product in the ocean.

Geochemical Negative Emissions Technologies: Part I. Review

James S. S. Campbell et al.

Summary: This article presents the development and different approaches of geochemical negative emissions technologies (NETs), which utilize alkaline minerals to remove and store atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). These technologies are still in the early stage of development, with only a few undergoing field trials. The article highlights the key features such as mineral resources, processes, kinetics, storage durability, risks, limitations, and the synergies with other technologies like direct air capture (DAC). It also explores the role of biological mechanisms in enhancing geochemical NETs. Part II of the article presents a roadmap to catalyze the research, development, and deployment of geochemical NETs at a gigaton scale in the coming decades.
