Environmental and human health impacts of geothermal exploitation in China and mitigation strategies

Yuanan Hu et al.

Summary: This review systematically summarizes the environmental and human health impacts of geothermal utilization in China and suggests key technologies and policy measures to mitigate them. Geothermal utilization in China can lead to pollution of local surface water, groundwater, soil, and air, affecting biodiversity. Toxic elements and gaseous pollutants pose risks to the health of people living in geothermal areas. Proper technology promotion and pollution control measures, along with government regulation and supervision, can help mitigate environmental impacts and human health risks.

Opportunity and challenges in large-scale geothermal energy exploitation in China

Yuanan Hu et al.

Summary: China has prioritized harnessing geothermal resources for renewable energy development, with little progress in geothermal power generation but rapid growth in geothermal direct use. Key barriers for geothermal energy utilization include the lack of high temperature hydrothermal resources for power generation and technological challenges. Significant investment in research and favorable policies are recommended to accelerate the growth of geothermal energy market.

Microbial Diversity and Sulfur Cycling in an Early Earth Analogue: From Ancient Novelty to Modern Commonality

C. Ryan Hahn et al.

Summary: The microbial communities and sulfur-cycling processes in preoxygenated earth were significantly different from current observed patterns, which were altered by the Great Oxygenation Event. Previously unknown microbial lineages with reductive sulfur process capacities were identified in Zodletone spring, indicating the impact of oxygenation on ancient microbial communities.

Novel Chloroflexi genomes from the deepest ocean reveal metabolic strategies for the adaptation to deep-sea habitats

Rulong Liu et al.

Summary: This study provides the first comprehensive examination of the metabolic potentials of Chloroflexi microbes in the Mariana Trench, revealing their ability to degrade a wide range of recalcitrant organic compounds, store energy, and respond to changes in nutrient conditions. These findings suggest that Chloroflexi may employ a feast-or-famine metabolic strategy to adapt to variable organic matter inputs in the deep ocean.

Effects of environmental factors on the distribution of microbial communities across soils and lake sediments in the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Xiaojie Wang et al.

Summary: Comparing the microbial community diversity and composition in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems can enhance our understanding of microbial community assembly mechanisms and ecosystem responses to environmental change. This study found significant differences in bacterial community diversity and composition between lakeshore soils and lake sediments. Heterogeneous selection was identified as the dominant mechanism shaping these differences. Environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, organic carbon, and nitrogen were found to play important roles in determining bacterial community composition.

Habitat and seasonal variations in bacterial community structure and diversity in sediments of a Shallow lake

Yujun Yi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the benthic bacterial community composition in different habitat types of Baiyangdian Lake in North China, revealing dominant bacteria in different habitats and their seasonal abundance. Habitat type was found to be the main factor influencing bacterial community composition, while sediment pH and active phosphorus content also played significant roles.

Physicochemical and Microbial Diversity Analyses of Indian Hot Springs

Manik Prabhu Narsing Rao et al.

Summary: The present study conducted physicochemical and microbial diversity analyses of seven Indian hot springs, and found that temperature and pH influenced microbial diversity, with bacteria being the dominant group. Both culture-dependent and culture-independent methods revealed the potential of these springs to harbor novel microbial candidates and produce thermostable enzymes.

Yunhui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study examined the microbial populations in subseafloor sediment cores from the South China Sea, providing insights into the vertical changes of microbial diversity and the importance of rare species in co-occurrence networks. The research highlighted the distinct responses of rare species to environmental factors and the potential roles they play in marine benthic ecosystems.

Temperature and microbial interactions drive the deterministic assembly processes in sediments of hot springs

Qing He et al.

Summary: The study found that microbial community assembly in geothermal ecosystems is influenced by stochasticity and biotic interactions, with differences between sediment and water communities in terms of diversity, species-interactions, and community assembly. Sediment communities are primarily governed by heterogeneous selection, while water communities are mainly influenced by undominated stochastic processes and dispersal limitation. Temperature and ferrous iron play a key role in mediating the balance of stochastic and deterministic assembly processes in sediment communities.
