Summary: In animal models, it has been found that mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) can ameliorate the effects of cigarette smoke-induced inflammation in the lungs and systemic inflammation. This study examines the expression of cytokines in guinea pigs exposed to cigarette smoke and the effect of MSC treatment. The findings suggest that MSC treatment can reduce inflammation in animals chronically exposed to cigarette smoke.

Heavy metals levels in road dust from Muscat, Oman: relationship with traffic volumes, and ecological and health risk assessments

Summary: The study found significant variations in heavy metal concentrations in road dust samples from Muscat, Oman. Mercury and arsenic showed increasing trends with traffic volume and were correlated to each other, suggesting vehicular emissions as their source. The ecological risk index for selected metals was considerable, but the hazard index was within the safe threshold. Overall, the study indicates minor health risks to the general public, with children being relatively more vulnerable to the impact of metals associated with dust.

Effect of heavy metals on ventricular repolarization and depolarization in the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) traffic enforcers' health study

Summary: The study found that blood heavy metal concentrations in traffic enforcers were associated with changes in QTc, JTc, and QRSc, which are markers of ventricular repolarization and depolarization on electrocardiograms. Specifically, an increase in cadmium levels was related to an increase in QRSc and QTc, and this association was stronger in participants who had never smoked and among males.

Occupational Exposure of Canadian Nail Salon Workers to Plasticizers Including Phthalates and Organophosphate Esters

Summary: This study assessed the personal exposure of nail salon workers in Toronto, Canada to 10 phthalates and 19 organophosphate esters. The results showed significant correlations between the levels of these compounds detected in passive silicone brooches and wristbands and those in active air samplers. Additionally, the higher concentrations of these compounds on the silicone brooches and wristbands suggest that these passive samplers can be used to measure the exposure of nail salon workers.

Urinary level of heavy metals in people working in smoking cafes

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the potential exposure of smoking cafes workers to heavy metals by quantifying amounts of these pollutants in urine samples. The results showed that the urinary levels of heavy metals in smoking cafe workers were significantly higher than those in non-smoking cafe employees and normal citizens. Additionally, urinary metal levels were found to be significantly higher after the exposure compared to before. The findings suggest that tobacco type plays a role in heavy metal exposure, and workers in smoking cafes are at high risk for DNA oxidative damage.

Urinary profile of PAHs and related compounds in women working in beauty salons

Summary: This study investigated the exposure risk of female beauticians to PAHs and found that their urine samples had high concentrations of pollutants. The concentrations of PAHs, 1-OHP, and TTMA in the urine samples of the exposure group were higher than those of the control group. Among the PAHs compounds, DahA, BaP, and IndP had the largest share. Additionally, kidney damage and oxidative stress biomarkers were positively correlated with urinary PAHs values. Therefore, female beauticians face high health risks in terms of kidney injury and DNA oxidative stress.

Toxic effects on enzymatic activity, gene expression and histopathological biomarkers in organisms exposed to microplastics and nanoplastics: a review

Summary: This review summarizes the existing literature on the effects of microplastics and nanoplastics on important biomarkers such as enzymatic activity, gene expression, and histopathology in various organisms from 2016 to 2021. The majority of studies focused on aquatic organisms, with zebrafish being widely used as a model organism. Polystyrene was the most important polymer used in experimental toxicology studies, and there were fewer studies on histopathological alterations compared to enzymatic activity and gene expression. There is a growing need to better understand the toxic effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of microplastics and nanoplastics on biomarkers of both aquatic and terrestrial organisms.
