Improving the spatial resolution of GRACE-based groundwater storage estimates using a machine learning algorithm and hydrological model

Wenjie Yin et al.

Summary: This study utilizes the partial least squares regression (PLSR) model to overcome the low-resolution characteristic of GRACE satellite data and improve water storage estimates. Three downscaling models are employed and results show that terrestrial water storage anomalies are closely related to four independent variables in the Haihe River Basin. The downscaled results based on NoahV2.1 and RF models effectively capture subgrid heterogeneity and maintain water storage characteristics at the original scale.

Assessing the utility of remote sensing data to accurately estimate changes in groundwater storage

Aakash Ahamed et al.

Summary: The study successfully quantified groundwater storage changes in California's Central Valley using remote sensing data and a water balance method. The estimates correlated well with independent sources and reliably captured long-term trends, seasonality, and groundwater depletion rates during droughts. The method also has the potential to estimate sub-annual changes in groundwater, providing valuable insights for regional water management during drought events.

Bridging the gap between GRACE and GRACE-FO missions with deep learning aided water storage simulations

Metehan Uz et al.

Summary: This study successfully reconstructs global land terrestrial water storage anomaly maps using deep learning models and achieves excellent performance in filling the 11-month data gap. The results also demonstrate the importance of external validation with independent datasets to maintain the robustness of the simulation results.

Comparison of physical and data-driven models to forecast groundwater level changes with the inclusion of GRACE - A case study over the state of Victoria, Australia

Wenjie Yin et al.

Summary: This study compares the performance of machine learning and physical models in predicting groundwater levels, with deep learning model (LSTM) showing higher accuracy than traditional machine learning models. The inclusion of GRACE data significantly improves the performance of predicted GWLs. The performance of models varies in different geographical areas.

Application of random forest and multi-linear regression methods in downscaling GRACE derived groundwater storage changes

Summary: The study downscales GRACE-derived terrestrial water storage anomalies using machine learning models and establishes correlations with various land surface and hydroclimatic variables. Testing on four hydrogeological basins in India indicates that predictor variables for downscaled TWSA should be carefully considered based on basin characteristics.

Exploring groundwater and soil water storage changes across the CONUS at 12.5 km resolution by a Bayesian integration of GRACE data into W3RA

Nooshin Mehrnegar et al.

Summary: The novel Bayesian MCMC-DA approach integrates GRACE TWSC data into the water balance model, improving water storage estimates across the CONUS, particularly for groundwater and soil water storage. This hybrid approach shows promise for understanding the links between climate and the water balance over broad regions, with improved representation of ENSO-related variability.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of groundwater overpumping in California's Central Valley and found significant groundwater losses during two drought periods. The research shows that recovery times for groundwater are sensitive to climate conditions, with climate change expected to exacerbate the situation.

Thermokarst acceleration in Arctic tundra driven by climate change and fire disturbance

Yaping Chen et al.

Summary: Climate warming and wildfires have synergistically accelerated thermokarst in Arctic Alaska, with thermokarst rates increasing significantly over the past few decades. Climate change is identified as the primary driver of thermokarst formation, while wildfires, despite burning a small portion of the landscape, disproportionately contribute to the phenomenon.
