Exploring sustainable solutions for the water environment in Chinese and Southeast Asian cities

Pingping Luo et al.

Summary: The study found that water environment problems are becoming increasingly severe in five representative cities in China and Southeast Asia, including water pollution, reduced aquatic biodiversity, and excessive groundwater extraction. To address these issues, countries and organizations have begun constructing wastewater treatment plants and developing water-saving technologies.

Ecological risk of heavy metals in lake sediments of China: A national-scale integrated analysis

Dianpeng Li et al.

Summary: Intensive anthropogenic activities, specifically, industrial and agricultural production, have led to the accumulation of heavy metals in lake sediment, posing threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health. Evaluating the potential ecological risk of heavy metals in lake sediment is crucial for effective lake management. However, large-scale risk evaluations of heavy metal pollution in lake sediment are lacking in densely populated countries like China. This study compiled data from 190 lakes across five geographic zones in China and evaluated the ecological risk and sources of heavy metals in lake sediment, providing valuable insights for policy formulation and lake restoration.

Exploring the environmental impact of crop production in China using a comprehensive footprint approach

Yunpeng Li et al.

Summary: Comprehensively evaluating the carbon, nutrient, and water cycles in farmland ecosystems is crucial for sustainable crop production. This study optimized environmental footprint approaches to assess greenhouse gas emissions, nitrogen loss, and water resource consumption in Chinese crop production. The results showed significant variations in environmental footprints among different crops, with fertilizer manufacture, NH3 volatilization, and green water footprint being the main contributors.

Trends and Causes of Raw Water Quality Indicators in the Five Most Famous Lakes of Jiangsu Province, China

Yajun Chang et al.

Summary: The lakes in China are facing ecological and environmental problems due to pollutants from industrial and agricultural activities. Monitoring of five famous lakes in Jiangsu Province showed differences in nutrient concentrations, petroleum levels, and heavy metal levels. Despite relatively low petroleum pollution, it negatively impacts phytoplankton density, while accumulated heavy metals in sediments may affect water quality and aquatic products in the future.

Comprehensive analysis of resource utilization efficiency under different tillage systems in North China Plain

Cong He et al.

Summary: Improving agro-resource utilization efficiency is crucial for developing an environmentally friendly agricultural system. The North China Plain, as the most important food-producing area in China, is facing challenges with low carbon and water efficiency. This study investigated the comprehensive assessment of carbon and water utilization and economic benefits in the North China Plain, finding that residue retention can improve carbon and water use efficiency, as well as increase farmer income.

Spatio-temporal accumulation patterns of trace metals in sediments of a large plateau lake (Erhai) in Southwest China and their relationship with human activities over the past century

Huiji Liu et al.

Summary: This study used 16 sediment cores from Lake Erhai to investigate the contamination of trace metals over the past century and their response to in-lake and in-watershed factors. The results showed that the distribution and accumulation of arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead in the cores were affected by both human activities and sediment supply.

Research on the geochemical background values and evolution rules of lake sediments for heavy metals and nutrients in the Eastern China Plain from 1937 to 2017

Mingke Luo et al.

Summary: For the first time, background quality guidelines have been developed for lake sediments along the Yangtze River. Evolution rules of watershed environment in Eastern China were analyzed from 1937 to 2017. Various methods were used to calculate sediment geochemical backgrounds, and the results showed fluctuating levels of risk and accumulation of metals and nutrients in lake sediments over different time periods.
