Implications for mitigation of antibiotic resistance: Differential response of intracellular and extracellular antibiotic resistance genes to sludge fermentation coupled with thermal hydrolysis

Chen Cai et al.

Summary: The study found that thermal hydrolysis pretreatment can effectively remove antibiotic resistance genes in sewage sludge, but may increase extracellular ARGs. Intracellular ARGs were dominant during the acidogenic fermentation process, while extracellular ARGs were susceptible to biodegradation and had limited contribution to ARGs propagation.

Synergistic degradation of fluorene in soil by dielectric barrier discharge plasma combined with P25/NH2-MIL-125(Ti)

Hongyu Lu et al.

Summary: The combination of dielectric barrier discharge plasma (DBDP) and Ti-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) catalysts shows high efficiency in degrading fluorene pollutant in soil, with low energy consumption. The system achieved over 90% degradation efficiency within 10 minutes, and 88.8% mineralization of fluorene within 60 minutes. This study provides insights for environmentally friendly soil remediation.

Enhanced short-chain fatty acids production through a short-term anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge: Synergistic pretreatment of alkali and alkaline hydrolase blend

Heliang Pang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of alkaline hydrolase blend (AHB) incubation at initial pH 10.0 condition for enhancing anaerobic fermentation in waste activated sludge management. The results show that this method significantly increased the release of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and promoted the hydrolysis and biodegradation of dissolved organic matters. The AHB-based strategy proves to be a cost-effective and carbon-beneficial technology for sludge management.

Evaluation of fluorene-caused ecotoxicological responses and the mechanism underlying its toxicity in Eisenia fetida: Multi-level analysis of biological organization

Falin He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxic effects of fluorene on Eisenia fetida and identified its underlying mechanisms. Results showed that fluorene caused lethality and oxidative stress on E. fetida, leading to DNA damage, protein carbonylation, and lipid peroxidation. Fluorene exposure also disrupted the reproductive system and growth of E. fetida and affected the expression of genes related to oxidative stress, growth, and reproduction. High-dose and long-term exposure had more severe poisoning effects on earthworms, and E. fetida coelomocyte DNA was highly affected by fluorene stress. These findings provide valuable insights into the ecological risks associated with fluorene-contaminated soil.

Investigation of biosurfactants produced by three indigenous bacterial strains, their growth kinetics and their anthracene and fluorene tolerance

Madhurya Ray et al.

Summary: This study isolated three bacterial species capable of producing biosurfactants from contaminated sites in Haldia, India, and found that they exhibit high tolerance to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The produced biosurfactants were stable under a wide range of temperature, pH, and salinity conditions. The findings suggest that these indigenous biosurfactant producing strains can be utilized for bioremediation purposes in environments with high PAH concentrations.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface waters from the seven main river basins of China: Spatial distribution, source apportionment, and potential risk assessment

Haiyan Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, long-term measurements of PAHs in surface waters of seven river basins across China were reported. The pollution level of PAHs was higher in North China than in South China, with coal and biomass combustion identified as the main contributors. Some individual PAH concentrations exceeded environmental quality standards, and certain river basins were found to be at moderate or high risk of contamination.

Influence of sludge organic matter on elimination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from waste activated sludge by ozonation: Controversy over aromatic compounds

Wenhao Li et al.

Summary: Ozonation is widely used for PAHs removal in waste activated sludge, but the influence of sludge organic matter on PAHs degradation during ozone treatment is still not well understood. This study found that the aromaticity of sludge is positively correlated with PAHs removal efficiency, while the aliphaticity is negatively associated. Additionally, humic acid in sludge matrix has different effects on ozone-based PAHs degradation, with HA-S facilitating removal and HA-D reducing efficiency.

Summary: The study constructed pilot-scale solid-phase denitrification systems with different carbon sources, analyzed the impact on microbial community structure, functions and metabolic pathways. PHBV-sawdust system outperformed the PHBV system in nitrogen removal efficiency, DOC release and NH4+-N accumulation. Metagenomic analyses revealed significant differences in microbial community structure between systems and the presence of four anaerobic anammox bacteria.

Sainan Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, the response of EPS in sludge to temperature was systematically investigated, showing an improvement in sludge dewaterability during freezing treatment through enhancement of EPS hydrophobicity, and a deterioration in sludge dewaterability during hydrothermal treatment due to increased EPS hydrophilicity.
