Molecular composition of dissolved organic matter in saline lakes of the Qing-Tibetan Plateau

Hongchen Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and microbial community structures in saline lakes. The dominant DOM molecules in these lakes were found to be aliphatic compounds, highly unsaturated, and oxygen poor/rich compounds. The composition of DOM was significantly correlated with environmental variables and microbial components. The findings highlight the importance of microbial factors in explaining the variation of DOM molecular composition in saline lakes.

Origin, accumulation and fate of dissolved organic matter in an extreme hypersaline shallow lake

A. Butturini et al.

Summary: This study investigates the availability and quality of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the water column of hypersaline endorheic aquatic systems (H-SEAS). The research finds that during a hydrological wetting-drying-rewetting cycle, the DOM pool undergoes significant alterations in molecular composition, with the release of organic solutes originating from decaying microplankton under large osmotic stress at extremely high salinities.

Dissolved organic matters with low molecular weight fractions exhibit high photochemical potential for reactive oxygen formation

Huacheng Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photochemical properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) with different molecular weights. The results showed that the low molecular weight fraction exhibited higher formation rates and quantum yields of reactive oxygens. The presence of humic-/fulvic-like substances and protein-/lipid-derived compounds in the low molecular weight fraction may contribute to the high photochemical potential of DOM.

Water Residence Time and Temperature Drive the Dynamics of Dissolved Organic Matter in Alpine Lakes in the Tibetan Plateau

YingXun Du et al.

Summary: The research found that water residence time and mean annual temperature are significant factors influencing the abundance of chromophoric DOM and fluorescent DOM in alpine lakes. Longer water residence time corresponds to DOM with lower molecular intensities, indicating that in-lake DOM processing dominates the regional variability of CDOM and FDOM. These findings suggest that under climate warming and lake enlargement, increased DOM could be processed and removed from Tibetan lakes.

Chemical characterization of non-volatile dissolved organic matter from oilfield-produced brines in the Nanyishan area of the western Qaidam Basin, China

Yaoling Zhang et al.

Summary: Oil and gas produced water is the largest waste stream generated in oil and gas industries. Understanding the compositions and features of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in O&G PWs from different geologic formations, ages, and origins is crucial for controlling adverse effects and developing efficient technologies for treatment and reuse. In this study, non-volatile DOM samples isolated from oilfield-produced brines in the Qaidam Basin were characterized by a multi-analytical approach, revealing that the compositions were dominated by aliphatics, possibly originating from shale-derived oil hydrocarbons as well as other sources.

Substantial decrease in CO2 emissions from Chinese inland waters due to global change

Lishan Ran et al.

Summary: The study reveals a significant decrease in CO2 emissions from Chinese inland waters over the past few decades, mainly influenced by environmental changes and reforestation programs. Meanwhile, CO2 emissions from inland waters in the Tibetan Plateau show an increasing trend, likely due to increased terrestrial deliveries of organic carbon and climate change.

Deep hydrothermal and shallow groundwater borne lithium and boron loadings to a mega brine lake in Qinghai Tibet Plateau based on multi-tracer models

Fancui Kong et al.

Summary: Brine lakes serve as natural laboratories for studying groundwater influences and mineralization processes in arid environments. Da Qaidam Lake in China is one of the largest brine lakes for boron and lithium resources, with deep hydrothermal and shallow groundwater as the dominant sources. This study used radium isotopes and multi-tracer models to partition deep and shallow LGD and quantify lithium and boron loadings, contributing to the understanding of lithium and boron budgets in brine lakes worldwide.
