Effects of land use, climate, and imperviousness on urban stormwater quality: A meta-analysis

Ian M. Simpson et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on stormwater quality data from 360 urban catchments worldwide, finding that urban land use and land cover, as well as climate, have a greater impact on runoff water quality compared to imperviousness. Different land use types and climate zones significantly affect runoff quality, especially the generation of certain metals and nitrogen species. Multiple linear regression models proved to be significant predictors of urban runoff quality, offering insights for better informing stormwater quality models and total maximum loads.

Detection of SARS-CoV-2 in urban stormwater: An environmental reservoir and potential interface between human and animal sources

Kay Bernard et al.

Summary: This study aimed to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in stormwater using RT-ddPCR, finding the virus in the majority of samples tested. The research also discovered that rainfall characteristics impact virus gene concentrations and different cities have varying levels of SARS-CoV-2 gene in stormwater.

Effects of land use on thermal enrichment of urban stormwater and potential mitigation of runoff temperature by watershed-scale stormwater control measures

Ian M. Simpson et al.

Summary: Stream temperature and thermal load increase significantly in urban areas compared to forested conditions, and green infrastructure retrofits have limited success in mitigating the impacts. More research and optimization of green infrastructure design are needed to protect cold-water ecosystems from urban development. Wholistic watershed management practices are also necessary to prevent thermal enrichment of streams and lakes by stormwater.

Assessing the TSS Removal Efficiency of Decentralized Stormwater Treatment Systems by Long-Term In-Situ Monitoring

Christian Lieske et al.

Summary: Decentralized treatment of stormwater runoff from heavily polluted surfaces is seen as an effective source control solution. Research conducted in Germany found that conventional sedimentation methods only have limited efficacy in reducing solid emissions, especially when the stormwater contains predominantly fine-particle solids like TSS63. Additional techniques, such as proper filtering, are needed for effective removal of fine particles in urban stormwater runoff with high TSS63 pollution.

Using Machine Learning to Analyze Physical Causes of Climate Change: A Case Study of US Midwest Extreme Precipitation

Frances Davenport et al.

Summary: Research indicates an increase in the frequency of extreme precipitation circulation patterns in the U.S. Midwest over the past two decades, with evidence of increased moisture transport and precipitation intensity during these patterns. Using deep learning visualization to understand how a convolutional neural network predicts these patterns may help reduce uncertainty in future projections of extreme weather events.

Rainfall, runoff and shallow groundwater response in a mixed-use, agro-forested watershed of the northeast, USA

Kaylyn S. Gootman et al.

Summary: The study found that the impact of rainfall on groundwater is greater than on stream stage, with significant differences in hydrologic responses between sub-catchments. Average precipitation thresholds lead to differences in runoff and shallow groundwater flow, with asynchronous responses observed in stream and shallow groundwater on precipitation-receiving days.
