Macro problems from microplastics: Toward a sustainable policy framework for managing microplastic waste in Africa

Gideon Gywa Deme et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution is a widespread and urgent environmental and public health issue in Africa. While traditional command-and-control approaches may not be effective, market-oriented private-public waste management methods could prove more successful in combating this issue.

Spatial variation of life-history traits in Bulinus truncatus, the intermediate host of schistosomes, in the context of field application of niclosamide in Cote d'Ivoire

Cyrille K. Konan et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of sprays of niclosamide on the life-history traits of Bulinus truncatus snail populations. The results showed spatial variation in these traits among populations, and the spraying of molluscicide appeared to depress certain life-history traits.

Distribution and seasonal abundance of Biomphalaria snails and their infection status with Schistosoma mansoni in and around Lake Tana, northwest Ethiopia

Tamirat Hailegebriel et al.

Summary: This study assessed the spatial and seasonal abundance of Biomphalaria snails and their infection status with S. mansoni in Ethiopia's Lake Tana region. Results showed that Biomphalaria snails were the most abundant freshwater snails throughout the year, with nearly 5% of the snails being infected with S. mansoni cercariae. The findings highlight the importance of implementing appropriate snail control strategies to support the prevention and control of schistosomiasis.

Microplastic burden in Africa: A review of occurrence, impacts, and sustainability potential of bioplastics

Emmanuel Sunday Okeke et al.

Summary: Africa is the second largest consumer of microplastics, yet little is known about their impact on the continent. Poor management of plastic waste in Africa leads to severe environmental consequences, including metal toxicity in organisms, disruption of the food chain, and health challenges for humans.

Rethinking the Top-Down Approach to Schistosomiasis Control and Elimination in Sub-Saharan Africa

Adeola Onasanya et al.

Summary: This paper highlights the challenges of using praziquantel-focused policy for schistosomiasis control and proposes new ways to shift from control to elimination. It suggests adopting a diversified approach and emphasizes the importance of co-creating strategies with affected communities to achieve the goals of schistosomiasis control and elimination.

Emerging and Re-emerging Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases and the Challenges for Control: A Review

Bayissa Chala et al.

Summary: Vector-borne emerging and re-emerging diseases pose significant public health challenges globally. Interactions among pathogens, hosts, environment, and social demographic factors are key to the emergence and re-emergence of these diseases. Ongoing evolution of pathogens, population growth, urbanization, and climate change are among the factors linked with the appearance and resurgence of vector-borne infectious diseases.

Aedes species (Diptera: Culicidae) ecological and host feeding patterns in the north-eastern parts of South Africa, 2014-2018

M. M. Guarido et al.

Summary: This study conducted entomological surveillance in selected areas in the north-eastern parts of South Africa between 2014 and 2018 to assess mosquito diversity, with a focus on Aedes species. The study also investigated the impact of trap types and environmental conditions, and identified the blood meal sources of engorged females. DNA barcodes were generated for selected species, with new sequence information uploaded on GenBank for nine of them.

Dengue Virus Infection in Sub-Saharan Africa Between 2010 and 2020: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Khalid Eltom et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on DENV infection in Sub-Saharan Africa, revealing a high prevalence of DENV infection in the region. It suggests the need for cost-efficient vector control strategies to be designed and implemented to adapt to the low-resource nature of this area.
