Secondary metabolite contents and safety assessment study of the aqueous extract from the Algerian Echium trygorrhizum Pomel roots

Allaoua Nouri et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the ethnopharmacology and safety of Echium trygorrhizum Pomel, a plant widely used in traditional Algerian medicine. It was found that this plant is commonly used for the treatment of jaundice, diabetes, and tonsillitis. The aqueous extract of this plant was found to contain high levels of polyphenols, flavonoids, and tannins. Acute and sub-acute toxicity tests conducted on mice and rats showed no toxicity at high doses. Therefore, it can be concluded that this plant extract has potential medicinal uses and is relatively safe.

Liquid Chromatography-Electron Capture Negative Ionization- Tandem Mass Spectrometry Detection of Pesticides in a Commercial Formulation

Achille Cappiello et al.

Summary: Negative chemical ionization (NCI) and electron-capture negative ionization (ECNI) are GC-MS techniques that offer high specificity and low background noise for compounds containing electronegative atoms or functional groups. These advantages have been extended to liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) with part-per-trillion detection limits achieved.

Optimum dose of Chaetoceros for controlling methanogenesis to improve power production of microbial fuel cell

P. P. Rajesh et al.

Summary: The marine algae Chaetoceros, containing hexadecatrienoic acid, can suppress methanogen development and improve coulombic efficiency in microbial fuel cells. Optimum concentration for inhibiting methanogens is around 10 mg/mL, with higher concentrations leading to decreased performance.

Microbial fuel cell (MFC)-based biosensor for combined heavy metals monitoring and associated bioelectrochemical process

Ke Zhang et al.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility and mechanism of MFC biosensor for wastewater detection under the action of combined heavy metals. The results indicate a linear relationship between the concentration and output voltage of the biosensor under the combined heavy metal group. However, the performance of the biosensor is mainly limited by Rct and needs further improvement.

Enhanced phytoremediation of selenium using genetically engineered rice plants

Zhenjun Li et al.

Summary: This study successfully redirected selenium flow in rice by overexpressing the genes encoding selenocysteine lyase and selenocysteine methyltransferase. Transgenic plants showed lower sensitivity to selenium stress and increased tolerance to selenate and selenite, as well as improved selenium elimination capabilities. These findings suggest that genetically modified plants have the potential to restore selenium-contaminated environments.

Aspergillus niger-mediated release of phosphates from fish bone char reduces Pb phytoavailability in Pb-acid batteries polluted soil, and accumulation in fenugreek

Hafiz Muhammad Tauqeer et al.

Summary: The study aimed to reduce phytoavailable lead concentration in soil from Pb-acid batteries dismantling units by using Aspergillus niger-mediated release of PO43- from fish bone products. The combination of A. niger with APII-C was the most effective treatment, significantly reducing lead phytoavailability in soil and plant uptake. The grain produced under this treatment was safe for human consumption and improved soil and plant quality parameters.

Real-time bioelectronic sensing of environmental contaminants

Joshua T. Atkinson et al.

Summary: In this study, biosensors that produce electrical readouts with fast detection times were developed by combining synthetic biology and materials engineering. Escherichia coli were programmed to produce an electrical current in response to specific chemicals, allowing for rapid detection of thiosulfate and an endocrine disruptor. This new platform provides design rules for sensing various chemicals and offers a potential solution for safeguarding ecological and human health.

Innovative air-cathode bioelectrochemical sensor for monitoring of total volatile fatty acids during anaerobic digestion

Hao Sun et al.

Summary: An innovative dual-chamber air-cathode microbial fuel cell was developed as a biosensor for volatile fatty acids (VFA) monitoring. The response of the biosensor was nonlinear, but linear at low concentrations, with high bicarbonate concentrations decreasing the voltage. Stirring speeded up the response but also reduced the detection range, and the biosensor was validated in monitoring VFA concentrations in AD effluents.
