Long-term elemental trends in drip waters from monitoring Bunker Cave: New insights for past precipitation variability

Dana Felicitas Christine Riechelmann et al.

Summary: A seven-year monitoring was conducted in Bunker Cave, northwest Germany, to study the hydrochemistry of the cave. The study analyzed cave air temperature, precipitation, drip rates, and cation and anion concentrations in rain, soil, and drip waters. The results showed the influence of geogenic and anthropogenic factors on the hydrochemistry of the cave. The study also highlighted the importance of long-term cave monitoring in understanding the complex processes of the cave system.

A reactive transport approach to modeling cave seepage water chemistry II: Elemental signatures

Jessica L. Oster et al.

Summary: Karst systems are valuable for studying variations in Critical Zone processes, as they offer insight into interactions between water and various geological features. This study focuses on trace element variations in cave seepage waters, with Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca affected by limestone dissolution and calcite precipitation, while Ba/Ca values are influenced by effective rainfall, serving as a consistent metric for limestone dissolution and calcite precipitation in the cave system.

Diurnal to seasonal ventilation in Brazilian caves

Natasha Sekhon et al.

Summary: The study reveals the significant impact of cave ventilation on cave geochemical properties, with different caves showing variations in CO2 concentrations and ventilation regimes across seasons. Buoyancy-driven cave ventilation is identified as a common mechanism in caves across low and mid-latitudes.

Hydroclimate variability during the last 2700 years based on stalagmite multi-proxy records in the central-western Mediterranean

Merce Cisneros et al.

Summary: This study presents a high-resolution speleothem-based hydrological reconstruction in the central-western Mediterranean for the last 2.7 kyr, revealing wet and dry climate conditions over different periods and discussing complex climate patterns in the region. The study highlights the interaction of factors controlling climate evolution, including wet-warm and wet-cold intervals during the last 2.7 kyr, with positive (negative) NAO phases coinciding with drier (wetter) conditions at decadal time-scales.
