Time-course distribution of fluorescent microplastics in target tissues of mussels and polychaetes

Mariana Calmao et al.

Summary: The majority of plastic produced in the last century has accumulated in the environment, causing serious contamination in marine environments. This study focused on the accumulation and distribution of microplastics in coastal organisms, specifically mussels and polychaetes. The results showed that both species accumulated microplastics in their digestive tracts and other organs, with higher concentrations observed at higher exposure doses. Raman spectroscopy was used to identify and study the internalization of microplastics in the organisms. This research contributes to understanding the impact of microplastic ingestion by coastal organisms and provides insights into their distribution and fate in different environmental compartments.

Differential staining lowers the false positive detection in a novel volumetric measurement technique of microplastics

Abhrajyoti Tarafdar et al.

Summary: A novel method for the volumetric detection of microplastics was developed and validated. The method uses Nile Red staining and a mixture of water-based dyes to eliminate interference from other organic polymers. The detection was compared with traditional Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and volumetric measurements were made using confocal microscopy images and 3D segmentation.

Ingestion of nano/micro plastic particles by the mussel Mytilus coruscus is size dependent

Shixiu Wang et al.

Summary: The study showed that the ingestion of nano/micro plastic particles in mussels is size-dependent and dynamic, with accumulation in the digestive tract and translocation in the mantle over time. The gill was not identified as a target tissue for steady particle accumulation, highlighting the importance of considering different tissues when studying the effects of plastic particles on marine organisms.

Polystyrene nanoplastics and microplastics can act as Trojan horse carriers of benzo(a)pyrene to mussel hemocytes in vitro

Alberto Katsumiti et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that polystyrene nanoparticles and microplastics can act as carriers for transferring benzo(a)pyrene to mussel hemocytes, potentially posing risks to aquatic organisms. The presence of BaP reduced particle aggregation and both plastics and BaP showed cytotoxic effects on hemocytes.
