Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA): Time-dependent Convection, Energy Conservation, Automatic Differentiation, and Infrastructure

Adam S. Jermyn et al.

Summary: We have updated the capabilities of the MESA software by implementing automatic differentiation, improving the treatment of convection, enhancing the equation of state, and updating various aspects of stellar modeling. We have also introduced new methods to increase the efficiency of calculating opacities and radiative levitation, and to evolve the late stages of massive stars. Additionally, we have made improvements to the software infrastructure of MESA to enhance source code development and community engagement.

Stellar and substellar companions from Gaia EDR3 Proper-motion anomaly and resolved common proper-motion pairs

Pierre Kervella et al.

Summary: The multiplicity survey is significantly improved by using a combination of the PMa, CPM, and RUWE indicators, which enhances the exhaustivity of companion detection and improves accuracy. The detection of CPM companions for bright stars provides a useful proxy for estimating their distance with higher accuracy than the HIPPARCOS method.

Five young δ Scuti stars in the Pleiades seen with Kepler/K2

Simon J. Murphy et al.

Summary: Mode identification was performed for five delta Scuti stars in the Pleiades star cluster using K2 photometry. The study found radial and dipole mode ridges, as well as offset modes, through echelle diagrams. Non-rotating stellar pulsation models were used to verify mode identifications, showing good agreement within the constraints of the cluster. The study also indicated potential for future investigation into asteroseismic rotation rates, masses, and ages using rotating models.

Images of embedded Jovian planet formation at a wide separation around AB Aurigae

Thayne Currie et al.

Summary: Direct images of protoplanets embedded in disks around infant stars provide important insights into the formation of gas giant planets like Jupiter. Using the Subaru Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope, a Jovian protoplanet is discovered around AB Aurigae, which is likely responsible for multiple planet-induced features in the disk. The observation also reveals candidate sites of planet formation at wide separations. The AB Aur system shows evidence for an alternative model of Jupiter's formation, namely disk instability, along with clump-like protoplanets and multiple spiral arms.

Direct-imaging Discovery and Dynamical Mass of a Substellar Companion Orbiting an Accelerating Hyades Sun-like Star with SCExAO/CHARIS

Masayuki Kuzuhara et al.

Summary: We present the direct-imaging discovery of a substellar companion orbiting a Sun-like star in the Hyades open cluster. This is the first direct imaging confirmation of a substellar companion around main-sequence stars in Hyades. The companion's spectrum suggests it is an early T dwarf, and its orbit parameters and mass have been determined. This discovery is important for understanding the formation, evolution, and atmosphere of substellar objects as a function of mass and age.

An edge-on orbit for the eccentric long-period planet HR 5183 b

Alexander Venner et al.

Summary: In this study, the orbital inclination of the long-period giant planet HR 5183 b was measured for the first time, using astrometry data from Hipparcos Gaia. The results indicate that HR 5183 b has a long orbital period and high eccentricity. The study also confirms the physical association between HR 5183 and HIP 67291, a binary system. Significant evidence of misalignment between the planetary and binary orbits was observed, suggesting a potential correlation with the formation history of HR 5183 b.
