Leveraging ultra-low interfacial tension and liquid-liquid phase separation in embedded 3D bioprinting

Senthilkumar Duraivel et al.

Summary: In recent developments in 3D bioprinting, the physics of interfaces has been relatively neglected. However, the discovery of liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) in living cells has sparked increased interest in the study of complex fluid interfaces. Researchers believe that many new insights from LLPS research can be applied to develop improved materials and methods for 3D bioprinting that leverage LLPS.

Capillary forces drive buckling, plastic deformation, and break-up of 3D printed beams

Christopher S. O'Bryan et al.

Summary: Capillary forces at soft material interfaces can cause deformations at the elastocapillary length scale. When surface stresses exceed yield stress, a plastocapillary effect can lead to yielding and plastic deformation. This study explores interfacial instabilities of 3D-printed fluid and elastic beams embedded in viscoelastic fluids and elastic solid support materials. The stability of embedded structures is determined by the balance between elastic solid yield stress, apparent interfacial tension, and beam radius.
