Implant-bone-interface: Reviewing the impact of titanium surface modifications on osteogenic processes in vitro and in vivo

Theresia Stich et al.

Summary: Titanium is commonly utilized in dental and orthopedic implants, however, implant failure risks still persist. Surface modifications of implants play a crucial role in improving osteointegration capacity and long-term success. The interaction between cells and materials on the implant surface is key to enhancing bone integration outcomes.

RF Magnetron Sputtering of Substituted Hydroxyapatite for Deposition of Biocoatings

Konstantin A. Prosolov et al.

Summary: This study investigates the deposition of antibacterial coatings on titanium alloy implant surfaces using RF magnetron sputtering. The research shows that the properties of the deposited coatings are influenced by the elemental composition and structure of the RF magnetron targets, as well as the substrate temperature during deposition and post-deposition heat treatment. Sintering the targets results in structural changes, while the use of nanostructured titanium improves the scratch resistance of the coatings.

Advances in Laser Additive Manufacturing of Ti-Nb Alloys: From Nanostructured Powders to Bulk Objects

Margarita A. Khimich et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing of low elastic modulus alloys with a certain level of porosity for biomedical applications is a growing area of research. Porous Ti-Nb alloy samples with open porosity and roughness were manufactured using LPBF, while dense samples had a smooth surface profile. In vitro cell viability tests showed increased cell density on the surface of porous Ti-Nb samples over time, indicating non-cytotoxicity and potential for further in vivo studies.
