Experimental investigation of the tensile behavior and acoustic emission characteristics of anisotropic shale under geothermal environment

Yide Guo et al.

Summary: This paper experimentally investigated the tensile behavior and acoustic emission characteristics of anisotropic shale under geothermal environment. The results showed that the tensile strength and absorbed energy decreased with increasing temperature, and the minimum values occurred in specimens with a layer inclination of 90 degrees. The anisotropic failure mode was influenced by temperature, while central tensile fracturing was temperature-independent. The cumulative acoustic emission hits of specimens increased with increasing temperature. Finally, the microstructure response, fracture length, fracture location, and proportion of fracture types were discussed, and potential applications and challenges of geothermal environment in hydraulic fracturing of deep shale reservoirs were proposed.

Shearing Damage Evolution of Natural Rock Joints with Different Wall Strengths

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: Understanding the shear damage evolution of natural rock joints is crucial for the stability of rock slopes and underground tunnels. This study used the combined technology of 3D scanning and 3D engraving to create three types of natural rock joint specimens with identical surface morphology. AE monitoring was applied to direct shear tests to reveal the shear damage evolution of the joints. The results showed that the shear damage characteristics of natural joints are localized and inhomogeneous, and the timing and type of main failure change with an increase in normal stress. Furthermore, the increase in normal stress first suppresses and then promotes the maximum percentage of microcrack length.

Time-dependent safety of lining structures of circular tunnels in weak rock strata

Baoguo Liu et al.

Summary: The safety of tunnel lining in weak strata is strongly related to time. This study proposes an analytical method for determining the time-dependent pressure in the surrounding rock and lining structure of a circular tunnel. Unlike existing methods, this approach considers the time dependency of the interaction between the surrounding rock and tunnel lining, making it more suitable for evaluating the lifetime of the lining structure.

Water saturation effects on mechanical performances and failure characteristics of rock-concrete disc with different interface dip angles

Zilong Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of water saturation and dip angle on the mechanical performance and failure characteristics of the rock-concrete interface. The results show that the peak load of the sample decreases after water saturation, regardless of the dip angle. The reduction of peak load is the most dramatic at a 15-degree dip angle. The weakening of water on the bearing capacity of the rock-concrete structure is most obvious at a theta angle of 18.43 degrees.

Summary: During the operational stage, lining cracking is a common issue for road tunnels, which affects tunnel integrity and service life. This study conducted scale tests to investigate the effectiveness of using FRP grid-PCM method for strengthening tunnel lining and studied the effects of various parameters on the control of lining cracking, such as the bias pressure, the layout range of the FRP grid layer, and the number of FRP grid layers. The results showed that the FRP grid layer effectively suppressed the propagation of tensile cracks and significantly improved the bearing capacity of the lining.

Experimental investigation on microstructure characteristics and deformation failure behaviors of sandstone after high temperature under Brazilian splitting

Haijian Su et al.

Summary: Investigating the thermal effect on the damage mechanisms of rocks and failure responses is crucial for the exploitation of deep mineral and geothermal resources. This study examined the influence of high temperatures on sandstone and found that thermal treatment induces microscopic damage, raises the porosity, and promotes size distribution transition of sandstone. The tensile strength and deformation coefficient of sandstone increased slightly from 25 to 400 degrees C, but experienced a decline at higher temperatures. Thermal damage significantly affects the fracture and deformation characteristics of sandstone.
