Thickness Calculation of Accumulative Damaged Zone by Rock Mass Blasting Based on Hoek-Brown Failure Criterion

Wenfeng Tu et al.

Summary: Tunnel excavation by cyclic blasting can cause cumulative damages to surrounding rocks, reducing the integrity of the rock mass and increasing the potential risks of disasters. This study deduced equations and established calculation methods to analyze the influence of cyclic blasting disturbance on the excavation damaged zone (EDZ) and quantified the range and thickness variation of the EDZ. The results showed that the EDZ under cyclic blasting undergoes three-stage variations and its thickness is influenced by various factors.

Experimental Study of Dynamic Characteristics of Tailings With Different Reconsolidation Degrees After Liquefaction

Wensong Wang et al.

Summary: The construction period of most tailing ponds is usually over ten years and may be affected by earthquakes and mining activities. The reconsolidation process of tailings after liquefaction, caused by earthquakes or vibrations, is prolonged. Changes in the nature of tailings due to previous earthquakes will affect the performance of tailing dams in subsequent earthquakes. The research results are of great significance for the safe disposal of tailings, especially those in earthquake-prone areas.

Infrared thermography for the investigation of physical-chemical properties and thermal durability of Tunisian limestone rocks

S. Mezza et al.

Summary: This study characterized limestone lithotypes from Bizerte region in extreme North of Tunisia to investigate their weathering resistance and damage from thermal shock cycles. Infrared thermography (IRT) monitoring was conducted to assess the correlation between cooling rate index (CRI) and physical or chemical characteristics of the rocks. Statistical clustering identified four classes based on porosity values. The study highlighted the validity of CRI as an indirect parameter for estimating low porous stones properties undergoing thermal weathering.

Nondestructive rock porosity estimation by InfraRed Thermography applied to natural stones

Simone Mineo et al.

Summary: Infrared thermography holds potential for predicting rock porosity, but its applicability on different rock types requires further research. The cooling rate within the first 10 minutes of testing is found to be the most suitable index for predicting rock porosity. Statistical analysis shows that total porosity can be predicted, and effective porosity can be indirectly estimated.

Controlling roof with potential rock burst risk through different pre-crack length: Mechanism and effect research

Tong-bin Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of pre-cracks on the fracture of rock beams and develops a pre-splitting design method. Experimental results show that pre-cracked beams exhibit different mechanical properties and the pre-splitting design method effectively reduces microseismic energy.

Research on the Characteristics of Infrared Radiation and Energy Evolution Law of Red Sandstone with Different Porosity during Uniaxial Compression

Yun Lin et al.

Summary: This study proposes the use of infrared radiation thermal imaging technology in rock mechanics tests. Through analyzing the infrared radiation temperature and stress-strain curves of sandstone during uniaxial compression loading, the characteristics of infrared radiation on sandstone are systematically analyzed. The results show that the strength of sandstone decreases with increasing porosity, and infrared thermography can reflect the deformation and failure stages of rock.

Remote thermal detection of exfoliation sheet deformation

Antoine Guerin et al.

Summary: Research suggests that rock slope failures, particularly from exfoliating cliffs, are promoted by rock deformations induced by daily temperature cycles. Integrated terrestrial laser scanning and infrared thermography techniques can effectively monitor and identify thermally induced deformations of rock sheets, offering a new and efficient approach for investigating potential rockfall sources on exfoliating cliffs.

Cyclic fatigue characteristics of rock failure using infrared radiation as precursor to violent failure: Experimental insights from loading and unloading response

Kewang Cao et al.

Summary: This research paper introduces a new method for predicting violent rock failure by measuring rock characteristics using infrared radiation under uniaxial cyclic loading and unloading. By determining the loading-unloading response ratio based on infrared indexes, different precursors of rock failure can be identified and categorized for warning purposes.

Anchoring effect and energy-absorbing support mechanism of large deformation bolt

Zhao Tong-bin et al.

Summary: The research found that during the structural deformation stage of large deformation bolts, the drawing force, bolt axial force, and interfacial shear stress remain stable; when the structural elements of the large deformation bolt approach the drawing end, the fluctuation range of the drawing force decreases, which is advantageous for maintaining the stress stability of the anchorage body.

Mechanical behaviour of a jointed rock mass with a circular hole under compression-shear loading: Experimental and numerical studies

Qibin Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the failure behavior and crack coalescence mechanism of jointed rock mass with a hole under compression-shear conditions through experiments and numerical modeling. The results showed that the peak load initially increased and then decreased with the increase in joint inclination angle, with various types of crack coalescence observed. The analysis of displacement fields further supported the experimental and simulation results.
