Rock Discontinuities Identification from 3D Point Clouds Using Artificial Neural Network

Yunfeng Ge et al.

Summary: In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm was employed to identify rock discontinuities using point cloud data, resulting in improved accuracy and efficiency. By specifying geometric attributes of the point cloud as input parameters, discontinuity and non-discontinuity groups were generated in the output layer, and the orientations of the discontinuities were calculated through further analysis. The selection of noise data during training samples greatly enhanced the accuracy of discontinuity detection. Additionally, an application was developed to implement the proposed method.

In-Situ Block Characterization of Jointed Rock Exposures Based on a 3D Point Cloud Model

Deheng Kong et al.

Summary: In-situ rock block characterization is crucial in rock mechanics and engineering, yet measuring and characterizing block geometrical properties remains challenging in various exposures and jointing patterns. A method using a point cloud model was developed, consisting of two procedures and a block indicator system for systematic and objective characterization. The method was applied to synthetic models and three different rock engineering scenarios, showing reliability and practical feasibility compared to existing empirical methods.
