Evaluation of lag time and time of concentration estimation methods in small tropical watersheds in Ethiopia

Dagnenet Sultan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the estimation methods for lag time and time of concentration in six small agricultural watersheds in three tropical climatic regions of Ethiopia. Most commonly used methods were found to significantly underestimate these values, leading to overestimation of runoff volume. The research highlights the importance of considering climatic and geomorphological differences when applying empirical methods to different regions.

Agroecology-based soil erosion assessment for better conservation planning in Ethiopian river basins

Ayele Almaw Fenta et al.

Summary: Soil erosion by water is a major environmental concern in Ethiopia, with cropland, river basins, and agroecological zones being the main areas affected. Implementing specific land management practices can significantly reduce soil loss and support sustainable use of land and water resources, particularly in severely eroded areas like the Abay and Tekeze basins and Dega and Weyna Dega agroecologies.

Characterizing shallow groundwater in hillslope aquifers using isotopic signatures: A case study in the Upper Blue Nile basin, Ethiopia

Tadesual Asamin Setargie et al.

Summary: This study focused on using stable isotopes of water as tracers to estimate the contribution of groundwater in shallow hillslope aquifers to streamflow in the Robit-Bata watershed in Ethiopia. The research revealed heavy isotopic enrichment of local water lines compared to global metrics, and indicated a rapid response of shallow groundwater to rainfall, with significant spatial correlation depending on topographic positions of wells.

Natural flood management, lag time and catchment scale: Results from an empirical nested catchment study

Andrew Black et al.

Summary: The study conducted in the Eddleston catchment over 9 years revealed that NFM interventions can significantly delay the hydrological response time in upstream catchments smaller than 26 km(2), while the effects are less pronounced in larger catchments and those treated with riparian planting alone.
