Summary: The study found that levels of COMP and MMP-3 were negatively associated with knee cartilage thickness and volume, and MRI markers assessed at different time points were also correlated with biochemical markers.

Relationship between abnormalities detected by magnetic resonance imaging and knee symptoms in early knee osteoarthritis

Seiya Ota et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of MRI findings and their relationship with knee symptoms in women without radiographic evidence of knee osteoarthritis (KOA). The study found that in patients with early KOA, the prevalence of cartilage damage, bone marrow lesions (BMLs), subchondral cysts, bone attrition, meniscal lesions, and synovitis was higher than in those without. Synovitis and meniscal lesions were positively associated with the presence of early KOA, with synovitis showing the strongest association with knee pain and potentially being a therapeutic target.
