A Role for Liquid-Ordered Plasma Membrane Nanodomains Coordinating the Unconventional Secretory Pathway of Fibroblast Growth Factor 2?

Fabio Lolicato et al.

Summary: FGF2 is a cargo protein that belongs to the unconventional protein secretion pathway, it translocates across the plasma membrane through sequential interactions with Na,K-ATPase, Tec kinase, and PI(4,5)P-2. The core mechanism of FGF2 membrane translocation involves lipidic membrane pore formed by PI(4,5)P-2-induced oligomerization of FGF2. The translocation intermediates of membrane-inserted FGF2 are resolved by glypican-1 on cell surfaces.

Lipid balance remodelling by human positive-strand RNA viruses and the contribution of lysosomes

Michele Lai et al.

Summary: In cells infected by single stranded positive-sense RNA viruses, a marked reorganization of internal membranes occurs, leading to changes in cell compartments to provide lipids for membrane rearrangement into replication organelles. This increased lipid consumption is achieved through lipolysis and lipophagy of lipid droplets.

Zika virus induces FOXG1 nuclear displacement and downregulation in human neural progenitors

Giulia Lottini et al.

Summary: This study found that Zika virus infection can cause changes in the localization and expression of transcription factor FOXG1, which is involved in cell replication and apoptosis. Growth factors and specific residues in FOXG1 played important roles in these processes. By deleting specific sequences, critical domains were identified. These results reveal the impact of Zika virus on FOXG1, its target genes, cell cycle progression, and survival of neural progenitor cells, contributing to microcephaly.

Summary: FGF family growth factors are crucial in tissue and organ repair after trauma, regulating various aspects of cellular behavior to facilitate reparative processes. Specifically, FGFs play a key role in controlling cell proliferation, stemness, de-differentiation, inflammation, angiogenesis, senescence, cell death, and protease production. Additionally, enhancing FGF expression and secretion in damaged tissues can increase the supply of FGF required for tissue repair.

Cross-Talk Between Inflammation and Fibroblast Growth Factor 10 During Organogenesis and Pathogenesis: Lessons Learnt From the Lung and Other Organs

Manuela Marega et al.

Summary: The adult human lung is constantly exposed to irritants in the external environment, which trigger local biological responses regulated by cells, cytokines, and growth factors, aiming to replace damaged cells through proliferation and differentiation. Among these factors, fibroblast growth factor (Fgf) family members play a key role in tissue homeostasis and repair, with Fgf10 being an important factor in organ morphogenesis and disease, influencing inflammation but also being impacted by it. The complex connection between Fgf10 and inflammation in organogenesis and disease in the lung remains unclear, warranting further research.
