Biohydrogen production with utilisation of magnetite nanoparticles embedded in granular activated carbon from coconut shell

Nina Farhana Mohd Jamaludin et al.

Summary: This study focuses on using magnetite nanoparticles embedded in granular activated carbon (GAC) derived from coconut shells as microbial support carriers for thermophilic biohydrogen production. The study investigates the impact of three variables - Ni:Fe ratio, MNP:GAC ratio, and type of GAC - on hydrogen productivity rate (HPR) using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with a Central Composite Design. The results show that the magnetite GAC (GAC-O) with Ni:Fe ratio of 0.53 and MNP:GAC ratio of 0.02 achieves an HPR of 20.33 +/- 0.32 ml H2/L.h, which is 63.99% higher than non-magnetite GAC. The developed magnetite GAC demonstrates great potential for improving biohydrogen production.

Oznur Beguem Gokcek et al.

Summary: With the advancement of technologies, there is a growing interest in producing renewable hydrogen using biological methods due to its economic and eco-friendly properties. Recent studies have investigated various pretreatment methods and additives to enhance the efficiency of biohydrogen production, such as enzymes and conductive materials. In this study, magnetite was employed to enhance the bioactivity of hydrogen-producing microorganisms during dark fermentation (DF). The addition of 100 mg/L magnetite resulted in the maximum biohydrogen production of 73.59 ml/gVS, representing a 46% increase compared to the control group. In the magnetite-supported reactor, the dominant bacterial genera were Sporolactobacillus (39%), Clostridium (15%), and Coprothermobacter (10%), which positively influenced biohydrogen production.
