Utilization of modified and artificial nests by endemic and introduced parrots on Norfolk Island

Daniel Gautschi et al.

Summary: This study examined the use of modified natural hollows and artificial nest sites to support endangered Norfolk Island green parrots. It was found that green parrots do not use artificial nests lacking a natural base, and prefer nests with thicker walls. Further research is needed to understand the reasons behind green parrots' avoidance of artificial nests.

Effect of forest logging on food availability, suitable nesting habitat, nest density and spatial pattern of a Neotropical parrot

L. Rivera et al.

Summary: Secondary cavity nesters, such as the threatened Tucuman Amazon parrot, heavily rely on the availability of existing cavities in trees. However, selective logging practices greatly reduce the number of old, large trees that are prone to develop cavities, which could have a negative impact on the density and spatial pattern of Tucuman Amazon nests. This study compared a mature undisturbed forest with a logged forest to evaluate the effects of logging on the forest structure, nesting site selection, food availability, cavity density, nest density, and nest spatial pattern of Tucuman Amazon.

Suitable nesting sites for specialized cavity dependent wildlife are rare in woodlands

Summary: The superb parrots are selective in choosing nesting trees and cavities, preferring deeper, wider, and larger entrance cavities. Suitable cavities for them are very scarce, which may limit the population growth and recovery of superb parrots.
