Efficacy and safety of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for fibromyalgia: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Xinxin Chen et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the efficacy and safety of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for fibromyalgia (FM). The results showed that HBOT could alleviate pain and improve tender points, fatigue, multidimensional function, patient global assessment, and sleep disturbance in FM, with reversible side effects. Evaluating HBOT at pressures lower than 2.0 atmospheres absolute may help reduce adverse events in FM.

ACE2 Serum Levels as Predictor of Infectability and Outcome in COVID-19

Maria del Carmen Maza et al.

Summary: This study found that highly exposed but uninfected individuals have significantly higher levels of ACE2 in their serum. Furthermore, the serum from these seronegative individuals can effectively neutralize SARS-CoV-2 infection, suggesting that high levels of ACE2 may provide some protection against active infection without generating a conventional antibody response. Additionally, the study also revealed that ACE2 levels were higher in infected patients who developed cutaneous symptoms compared to respiratory symptoms, and ACE2 levels were higher in patients with milder symptoms.

Shani Zilberman-Itskovich et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on patients with post-COVID-19 condition. The results showed that HBOT can improve cognitive, psychiatric, fatigue, sleep, and pain symptoms in these patients, and the improvements were associated with increased brain perfusion and neuroplasticity in certain regions.

Increasing Oxygen Partial Pressures Induce a Distinct Transcriptional Response in Human PBMC: A Pilot Study on the Normobaric Oxygen Paradox

Deborah Fratantonio et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to different concentrations of hyperoxia leads to activation of different oxygen-sensitive transcription factor patterns in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Mild hyperoxia is perceived as hypoxic stress, leading to activation of HIF-1α and NRF2, while high and very high concentrations of hyperoxia induce an oxidative stress response, characterized by activation of NRF2 and NF-κB.

The Role of P-Selectin in COVID-19 Coagulopathy: An Updated Review

Chiara Agrati et al.

Summary: Severe COVID-19 cases present with blood clots and neutrophil-platelet aggregates, leading to an increased risk of cardiovascular complications and venous thrombotic events. The inflammatory storm may disrupt the interplay between platelets, endothelium, and leukocytes, contributing to COVID-19-associated coagulopathy. P-selectin is identified as a key molecule in this process and could potentially be used as a severity marker and therapeutic target for COVID-19 treatment.

Platelets amplify endotheliopathy in COVID-19

Tessa J. Barrett et al.

Summary: The study reveals an inflammatory hypercoagulable state between platelets and endothelial cells in COVID-19, with platelet-released factors promoting endotheliopathy. S100A8, S100A9, and their protein product MRP8/14 are enriched in COVID-19 platelets and contribute significantly to poor clinical outcomes. Targeting platelet P2Y(12) appears to be a promising strategy for reducing proinflammatory platelet-endothelial interactions in COVID-19.
