The impact of packaging recyclable ability on environment: Case and scenario analysis of polypropylene express boxes and corrugated cartons

Xin Guo et al.

Summary: With the increasing focus on sustainable design strategies, recyclable packaging has gained popularity in the express delivery industry due to its potential to reduce environmental burden and address climate challenges. This study quantified and integrated the environmental impact of a polypropylene hollow board express box and established an evaluation model based on life cycle assessment. The results showed that the polypropylene hollow board express box had a significantly lower environmental footprint compared to the corrugated cartons express box.

Environmental Burdens of China's Propylene manufacturing: Comparative life-cycle assessment and scenario analysis

Lin Lv et al.

Summary: This study compared the environmental impacts of four typical propylene production routes in China using the life-cycle assessment methodology. The results showed trade-offs across nine environmental dimensions, making it difficult to rank the environmental advantages of each production route. Raw materials consumption was found to dominate the environmental burdens of the different routes, with the highest environmental loads in the coal to olefin process. The findings highlight the need for close attention to the feedstock shift in the propylene industry to promote environmental sustainability in the Chinese chemical manufacturing industry.

United States plastics: Large flows, short lifetimes, and negligible recycling

Jinghan Di et al.

Summary: This study highlights the challenge plastics pose to the environment and human health in the United States, with low-density polyethylene, high-density polyethylene, and polypropylene being the most used plastics in production and manufacturing processes. Despite being widely used in packaging, consumer goods, and construction, the actual recycling rates of these plastics are low, presenting a significant obstacle to the sustainability goals of the country's circular plastics economy.
