Spatial disparity of life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions from corn straw-based bioenergy production in China

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the greenhouse gas emissions of seven corn straw-based bioenergy conversion pathways across 30 provinces in China. It found that the spatial disparity of economic supply chains led to varying emissions levels across provinces, with most pathways showing emission reduction benefits but a few pathways exhibiting emissions in certain provinces. Additionally, the spatial teleconnection of economic supply chains showed that bioenergy production in one province could impact GHG emissions in other provinces.

The role of future anthropogenic methane emissions in air quality and climate

Zosia Staniaszek et al.

Summary: Mitigation of methane emissions is crucial for achieving the goals of the Paris climate agreement. This study uses a new version of the UK Earth System Model to simulate a zero anthropogenic methane emissions scenario and finds profound impacts on atmospheric composition and climate. The study highlights the maximum potential of methane emissions reductions and their positive air quality benefits, but also emphasizes the need for action on carbon dioxide emissions.

A comparative environmental life cycle assessment of rice straw-based bioenergy projects in China

Ahmed Alengebawy et al.

Summary: Bioenergy is a promising solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and the use of life cycle assessment (LCA) method can help compare and evaluate the environmental impacts of different production stages. This study applied LCA method to assess three rice straw utilization scenarios and found that the syngas scenario had the highest net energy and net greenhouse gas balances, while also making the smallest contribution to environmental burdens.

Summary: This study examines the stability and sustainability of the straw feedstock supply chain in China and proposes a model to simulate its operation, with a case analysis conducted. The results show that a triple-win solution among farmers, brokers, and bioenergy conversion plants can be achieved through reasonable profit allocation and optimization schemes. Additionally, the study explores the optimization challenges and opportunities under unique circumstances in China.

Nexus Between Crop Residue Burning, Bioeconomy and Sustainable Development Goals Over North-Western India

V. Venkatramanan et al.

Summary: Crop residue burning in India, especially in North-western India, has led to air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and declining soil productivity. This paper aims to estimate the emissions from crop residue burning, recommend interventions for crop residue management, and propose a bioeconomy model to sustainably manage crop residues. The study estimated that in 2017-18, a total of 516 million tonnes of crop residues were generated, with 116 million tonnes being burned, releasing various pollutants into the atmosphere.

Life cycle assessment comparison of three typical energy utilization ways for corn stover in China

Xing Su et al.

Summary: By using the life cycle assessment method, this study compared the environmental impacts of three common stover utilization methods and found that stover gasification has the most damage on the environment. Stover pellets utilization has less impact on resource depletion but is more harmful to human health and ecosystem. Parameters such as materials used, transportation, equipment operation energy consumption, and stover utilization efficiency were identified as the main factors affecting the LCA results.

Spatially explicit analysis identifies significant potential for bioenergy with carbon capture and storage in China

Xiaofan Xing et al.

Summary: The study presents a promising option to reduce carbon emissions in China's power sector using BECCS technology, estimating a marginal cost curve and spatially explicit method. Retrofitting 222GW of coal power plants in 2836 counties could potentially abate 1.0 Gt CO2-eq annually, but logistical challenges remain.

Global greenhouse gas emissions from animal-based foods are twice those of plant-based foods

Xiaoming Xu et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed account of greenhouse gas emissions from plant- and animal-based foods worldwide, with agriculture and land use identified as major sources of emissions. Rice and beef were found to be the largest contributing commodities, with global emissions primarily coming from the production of animal-based food.
