Socioeconomic drivers of China's resource efficiency improvement: A structural decomposition analysis for 1997-2017

Heming Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the drivers of China's resource intensity changes and finds that China's total resource intensity has decreased by 20% in the past 20 years. The direct distribution effect is the main contributor to the decline, while input structure poses the biggest obstacle. The construction sector has the highest resource intensity.

How do China's lockdown and post-COVID-19 stimuli impact carbon emissions and economic output? Retrospective estimates and prospective trajectories

Shuai Shao et al.

Summary: This paper develops a multi-sector and multi-factor model to analyze and quantify the changes in emissions and output. The study finds that China's containment policy has a global impact through supply chains, with carbon-intensive sectors experiencing the greatest shocks. It also highlights the need for additional efforts to meet China's emission reduction and carbon peaking goals.

Modeling economic losses and greenhouse gas emissions reduction during the COVID-19 pandemic: Past, present, and future scenarios for Italy

Dario Cottafava et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the socioeconomic impact of COVID-19 lockdowns, using Italy as a case study. By using an input-output model, the researchers analyze the economic losses and greenhouse gas emissions reductions caused by the restrictions. The study also proposes different scenarios to highlight the utility of the model in policymaking.

Scarcity-weighted metal extraction enabled by primary suppliers through global supply chains

Yumeng Li et al.

Summary: Metal shortage and supply risk are major challenges to sustainable development. This study evaluates scarcity-weighted metal extraction enabled by primary suppliers through global supply chains and identifies China, Peru, and Ireland as countries with highest income-based scarce metal extraction in 2014. Resource-abundant countries play a significant role as primary suppliers, and critical sectors include trade, business services, and oil.

Toward a better understanding of virtual water trade: Comparing the volumetric and impact-oriented virtual water transfers in China

Linxiu Wu et al.

Summary: The scarcity and spatial mismatch of water resources are putting increasing pressure on global water sustainability. Trade through interregional virtual water transfer can help alleviate or worsen this pressure based on regional water endowments. Previous research has primarily focused on volumetric virtual water transfers, neglecting the actual impact on local water resources. This study compares volumetric and impact-oriented water footprints in China in 2012 and 2015 using a multiregional input-output model. The findings reveal a clear gap between the pattern of volumetric virtual water flow and impact-oriented virtual water flow.
