Life cycle assessment of paper and plastic grocery bags used in Sri Lankan supermarkets

P. Pitawala et al.

Summary: The large-scale use of plastic grocery bags has a significant impact on the environment, and paper bags are considered a popular alternative. However, a life cycle assessment study in Sri Lanka shows that although plastic bags have a lower overall environmental impact, they have greater negative effects on certain categories such as global warming and ecotoxicity. On the other hand, paper bags have adverse impacts on ozone depletion and eutrophication. The extraction of raw materials, bag production, and end-of-life stages are the most influential life cycle stages for both bag types.

IMPACT OF TORREFACTION AND ALKALI PRETREATMENT ON GLUCOSE PRODUCTION FROM WHEAT STRAW

Daniel Ciolkosz et al.

Summary: The impact of torrefaction, alkaline pretreatment, and their combination on glucose yield from wheat straw was investigated. The study found that torrefaction reduced glucose yield, while alkaline pretreatment increased glucose yield. Alkaline pretreatment after torrefaction resulted in higher glucose yields compared to torrefied-only samples, but still lower than raw biomass pretreated with alkaline solution.

Switchgrass as oil and water-spill sorbent: Effect of particle size, torrefaction, and regeneration methods

Jaya Tripathi et al.

Summary: Switchgrass, both raw and torrefied, showed increased sorption capacity for water and oil with decreasing particle size. Centrifugation can partially desorb liquid from the sorbent, and subsequent sorption cycles maintain high capacity.

Recycled Paper as a Source of Renewable Jet Fuel in the United States

William L. Kubic et al.

Summary: Converting paper waste into jet fuel is more cost-effective than producing jet fuel from corn stover, but it is still not competitive with petroleum. Overcoming economic obstacles, such as the cost of cellulose hydrolysis, is crucial for making recycled paper jet fuel competitive.

Diazo-Based Copolymers for the Wet Strength Improvement of Paper Based on Thermally Induced CH-Insertion Cross-Linking

Simon Schoelch et al.

Summary: The study introduces an alternative method to improve the wet strength of paper by using thermally cross-linked copolymers and investigates their effects on paper substrates. Results show that the method significantly increases the wet strength of paper, with modified samples showing tensile indices over 50 times higher compared to unmodified samples.

Enabled cellulose nanopaper with outstanding water stability and wet strength via activated residual lignin as a reinforcement

Jinlong Wang et al.

Summary: The study proposes a strategy to enhance the water stability and wet strength of cellulose nanopaper (CNP) by using activated residual lignin, reducing water absorption and swelling while increasing wet strength. This simple, eco-friendly and cost-efficient strategy has the potential to expand the utilization of cellulose in various applications.
