Inter-Provincial Power Transmission and Its Embodied Carbon Flow in China: Uneven Green Energy Transition Road to East and West

Li Ma

Summary: Inter-provincial power transmission in China has played a crucial role in solving the spatial mismatch between electricity production and consumption, promoting green energy transition, and achieving sustainable development. The study shows that over the years, inter-provincial power transmission has led to a decrease in the national average carbon intensity per electricity produced, contributing to the green energy transition of all provinces. The spatial patterns of carbon flow indicate a "West-East Power Transmission" pattern, with power being transmitted from thermal power-dominated provinces in central and north-west China to the eastern coastal provinces.

Potential contributions of wind and solar power to China's carbon neutrality

Laibao Liu et al.

Summary: China's goal of being carbon-neutral by 2060 can be achieved by deploying wind and solar capacity of approximately 2495 GW and 2674 GW respectively within flexible and optimized grids. This would meet about 67% of electricity demands for all sectors by 2050, reduce significant amounts of SO2 and NOx emissions, and secure a green energy supply for the country.

Projected material requirements for the global electricity infrastructure - generation, transmission and storage

S. Deetman et al.

Summary: The analysis forecasts a rapid growth in demand for most materials in the electricity sector in the coming decades, driven by increased electricity demand and a shift towards renewable electricity technologies. Under climate policy assumptions, the annual demand for various materials in the electricity sector is expected to continue growing towards 2050.

Embodied greenhouse gas emissions from building China's large-scale power transmission infrastructure

Wendong Wei et al.

Summary: The research shows that the construction of China's power transmission infrastructure has led to a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions, reaching 0.89 GtCO(2)-equivalent by 2017, a 7.3-fold increase since 1990. The gaps between the well-developed eastern and less-developed western regions in China have gradually narrowed. Voltage class, transmission-line length, and terrain were identified as important factors influencing embodied GHG emissions.
