Regional discrepancy of microbial community structure in activated sludge system from Chinese WWTPs based on high-throughput 16S rDNA sequencing

Jinsen Zhang et al.

Summary: Understanding microbial community structure in activated sludge systems at a regional level is important for the operation of wastewater treatment plants. This study analyzed 110 activated sludge samples from 21 cities in different regions of China using high-throughput 16S ribosomal DNA sequencing. The results showed that different characteristics of regions, such as south vs. north, coastal vs. inland, and high GDP vs. low GDP, had a significant impact on the bacterial community in activated sludge. Core bacterial communities were more abundant in the south, and many species in these communities were associated with nutrient removal. Coastal wastewater treatment plants had unique bacterial communities influenced by marine bacteria. High GDP regions had more diverse microbial communities and effective wastewater treatment. The assembly of microbial communities was mainly influenced by deterministic factors, with influent quality as the main factor.

Study on the advanced nitrogen removal under low temperature by biofilm on weak magnetic carriers

Sien Chen et al.

Summary: Advanced nitrogen removal is hindered by reduced microbial activity at low temperatures. Packed bed reactors filled with different magnetic carriers were used to enhance advanced denitrification at a temperature of 5 degrees Celsius. The results demonstrated that 0.3 and 0.9 mT carriers significantly improved denitrification, suggesting the presence of a window effect. Enzyme activity and electron transport chain analysis indicated that the 0.3 mT carrier primarily increased NIR activity, while the 0.9 mT carrier mainly increased NAR activity, suggesting different pathways. Overall, weak magnetic carriers can enhance advanced nitrogen removal at low temperatures.
