Food production and resource use of urban farms and gardens: a five-country study

Erica Dorr et al.

Summary: There is a lack of data on resources used and food produced at urban farms, which hampers efforts to quantify the environmental impacts of urban agriculture and develop sustainable food production policies. To address this gap, a citizen science approach was used to collect data from 72 urban agriculture sites in five countries. The study found that urban farms require various resources and have diverse contributions to local biodiversity, with yields that can surpass those of conventional farms. The study highlights the need for further research on crop selection and growing practices to understand the environmental impacts of urban farming.

Environmental impacts and resource use of urban agriculture: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Erica Dorr et al.

Summary: Environmental merits are a common motivation for urban agriculture projects, and life cycle assessment (LCA) is used to quantify environmental impacts. Recent LCAs of urban agriculture have shown mixed conclusions about their environmental performance. Issues with quality, consistency, and data variability in LCAs prevent definitive conclusions about the environmental impacts and resource use of urban agriculture.

Practices and Barriers to Sustainable Urban Agriculture: A Case Study of Louisville, Kentucky

Leigh Whittinghill et al.

Summary: The study surveyed forty urban farmers and gardeners in Louisville, Kentucky, finding key challenges in their agricultural practices such as limited space, accessibility to farm certification, and pests and diseases. It also identified areas for improvement and suggested the need for enhanced education, outreach, research, and better access to land through favorable urban policies and local support.
