Live birth rate following undisturbed embryo culture at low oxygen in a time-lapse incubator compared to a high-quality benchtop incubator

Dimitrios Kalleas et al.

Summary: This study compared the use of Time-lapse incubators and conventional incubators in in vitro fertilization cycles and found that patients using Time-lapse incubators had a higher chance of live birth and a lower rate of early pregnancy loss. There were more 4-cell embryos and 8-cell embryos in the Time-lapse incubators.

Robust and generalizable embryo selection based on artificial intelligence and time-lapse image sequences

Jorgen Berntsen et al.

Summary: Assessing and selecting the most viable embryos for transfer is crucial in IVF, and the use of AI and deep learning has improved and automated this process. This study investigates a deep learning-based embryo selection model and its performance across different patient ages and clinical conditions, showing its correlation with traditional morphokinetic parameters. The model was trained and evaluated using a large dataset from 18 IVF centers, demonstrating its effectiveness and generalization to new clinics.

Increased blastomere number is associated with higher live birth rate in day 3 embryo transfer

Lifeng Tian et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between blastomere number on day 3 and pregnancy outcomes. The results showed that an increased blastomere number was associated with a higher live birth rate in single day 3 embryo transfer cycles. This finding challenges the consensus on the reduced developmental potential of fast-cleaving embryos, and further large prospective studies are needed for confirmation.

Correlation between an annotation-free embryo scoring system based on deep learning and live birth/neonatal outcomes after single vitrified-warmed blastocyst transfer: a single-centre, large-cohort retrospective study

Satoshi Ueno et al.

Summary: Does an annotation-free embryo scoring system based on deep learning and time-lapse sequence images correlate with live birth (LB) and neonatal outcomes? Patients who underwent single vitrified blastocyst transfer (SVBT) cycles were included in the study. The iDAScore software module was used to calculate scores. The study found that iDAScore correlated with decreased miscarriage and increased live birth rates, but had no correlation with neonatal outcomes.

Developmental potential of different embryos on day 3: a retrospective study

Ji Liu et al.

Summary: This retrospective study analysed the impact of different quality of day 3 (D3) embryos on blastocyst formation and clinical outcomes in assisted reproductive technology (ART) patients. The study found that embryos with grade C (>10 cells, symmetrical blastomeres and/or <20% fragmentation) had relatively good development potential, while embryos with grade A (6-10 cells, symmetrical blastomeres and/or <20% fragmentation) showed better clinical outcomes. Embryos with slower development (grade E group) also showed promising clinical outcomes.

Single blastocyst stage versus single cleavage stage embryo transfer following fresh transfer: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Yutao Li et al.

Summary: In a study involving 1784 patients, single blastocyst stage transfer (SBT) was found to have significantly higher clinical pregnancy rate, ongoing pregnancy rate, and delivery rate compared to single cleavage stage transfer (SCT). However, there were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of miscarriage rate, multiple pregnancy rate, and ectopic pregnancy rate, with the SCT group containing more cryopreserved embryos. Further larger and higher-quality RCTs are needed for a fully informed decision.

Cleavage vs blastocyst stage embryos: how are they interrelating?

Eran Zilberberg et al.

Summary: A higher number of blastomeres and better embryo grading were found to correlate with a higher blastulation rate. Nevertheless, if the embryo has developed to a top-quality blastocyst, its morphology at the cleavage stage did not impact ongoing pregnancy rate.

Summary: The study found that the annotation-free embryo scoring system iDAScore outperformed other systems relying on annotation or morphology scores in predicting pregnancy outcomes after single vitrified blastocyst transfer (SVBT), especially in young patients.

Embryo selection with artificial intelligence: how to evaluate and compare methods?

Mikkel Fly Kragh et al.

Summary: Embryo selection in IVF involves evaluating fertilized egg quality and using AI to assist in selecting embryos most likely to result in successful pregnancies. Debate exists on whether AI methods outperform manual evaluation, with variations in evaluation metrics and comparisons across studies.
